In a move that's one part surprising and many parts inspiring, Oregon State starting linebacker David Pa'aluhi has decided to withdraw from the football program.
In order to serve in the military.
While the branch of the military is not listed, a press release from the school confirmed this evening that Pa'aluhi has decided to leave the school to join the United States Armed Forces.
"We fully support David's decision," head coach Mike Riley said in a statement. "He's a terrific young man with a great future, and all of us in the Beaver football program thank him for his contributions and wish him the very best."
As a redshirt sophomore last season, Pa'aluhi started all 13 games at linebacker for the Beavers. He was second on the team in tackles with 77, and received Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors in 2009.
Again, I don't know what branch of the military Pa'aluhi is joining, or the reasons behind his decision -- he has a wife and a child and has apparently been mulling a life-altering change for awhile -- but God bless you and thank you for your service. Takes a helluva young man to make that kind of decision and potential sacrifice. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duck receiver gets the boot after Facebook blast Posted by John Taylor on February 21, 2010 6:44 PM ET CollegeFootballTalk
The tumult that is the Oregon football program continued this afternoon as wide receiver Jamere Holland has been dismissed from the football program.
And he's not even one of the five UO players who have been arrested in the past three weeks.
According to The Oregonian, Holland was given the boot for violating unspecified team rules. Although the school is not commenting on why Holland was dismissed, SportsByBrooks.com has likely dug up the answer.
The website posted a screen snap from Holland's Facebook page in which the receiver took the program to task for apparently kicking linebacker Kiko Alonso -- who was arrested for DUI early Saturday morning -- off the team.
"how the f-- you kick kinko off the team,,, on some weak sh-, niggas always faded he slipped up but ive been slippn up, and I'm still here, that sh- weak buff cuh could have done damage for the ducks, that sh- is weak, weak *** f--, quote me."
First of all, you simply can't call out your head coach and his program, which Holland has learned the hard way.
Secondly, if you are going to publicly call out your coach, could people at least be somewhat grammatically correct? I understand it's bad form to call out someone's grammar on the Internet, but **** dude. Mix in a shift key and spell-check every other sentence or so.
Anyway, and right or wrong, head coach Chip Kelly appears to be the leader of a program on the verge of being out of control. And that might be an understatement.
Whether or not the program is indeed out of control is not the issue. The perception is that it is, and that's a helluva mountain to have to climb to get back the school's tattered and battered image. ----------------------------------------

Kiffin offers 13-year-old QB scholarship Posted by Keith Arnold on February 4, 2010 10:44 PM ET CFT
If David Sills is worried about any potential NCAA sanctions heading USC's way, he isn't showing it. That's probably because the middle-schooler won't sign his letter of intent until 2015.
USC head coach Lane Kiffin offered the 7th grade quarterback from Delaware a scholarship today and Sills accepted.
"I'm very excited, but I was very, very nervous," Sills told the News Journal tonight. "It was very cool but my heart was beating so fast and I was scared. But after it was over, I was so excited and pumped."
Sills has been training with California quarterback coach Steve Clarkson since he was a 10-year-old, and the 13-year-old quarterback is now a twiggish 5-foot-11 and 135 pounds. Don't worry, Trojan fans, doctors tell Sills that once he goes through -- well, you know -- puberty, he could grow to 6-foot-5.
I'm trying to find positive things to say about this, but let's get serious. What are the odds this kid ends up at USC? One in ten? One in fifty? What are the odds Lane Kiffin is coaching the Trojans in 2015? One in a hundred?
Kiffin, who made headlines offering Eric Berry's 13-year-old brother a scholarship last year and accepting his commitment to the Vols, followed the same playbook with a kid, this time offering a kid that's been making headlines for getting shipped across the country and spending thousands of dollars on sports to follow his father's dreams since he was ten.
(Does anyone else feel like they need to take a shower?)
The NCAA prohibits schools from formally offering scholarships until a recruit registers with the NCAA Clearinghouse, but why would that stop Kiffin from getting his hands on a preteen?
While I'm sure USC will backpedal their way out of this one, and this is all a part of Kiffin's grand-plan to draw publicity to a Trojan program that really needs more eyeballs on it (or to gather a few more secondary violations), but Kiffin really does his best to be a part of what's wrong with college football. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We can't have a college playoff system....but it's OK to recruit 13-year old kids? Stay classy, NCAA. I'm really starting to believe what Al Davis said about him. Tennessee fans....you burned Knoxville to the ground over losing this guy?
L.A. and national college football media consensus has Jack Del Rio, who is once again on the ropes in Jacksonville, taking over for Carroll at USC - but only if he allows USC boosters to hire his key assistants. Names kicked around for Del Rio’s staff are Ed Orgeron, Norm Chow and Kennedy Pola. All three were on Carroll’s staff for USC’s championship run.
You might think that USC will have a war on its hands in trying to pry Chow away from UCLA, but remember that as a private school, USC is uninhibited in what it can pay Chow. State school UCLA doesn’t have that luxury.
As an aside, I’ve been told that when news broke out that Mike Riley was under consideration for the USC, UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel called Oregon State commits to try to get them to drop the Beavers for the Bruins.
As for Del Rio’s USC staff, most likely to be first in line is Orgeron, a recruiting ace who Del Rio once interviewed and tried to hire in Jacksonville.
One other tidbit for recruiting junkies: Del Rio played with Jim Jeffcoat with the Cowboys, whose son Jackson is a top prospect in Texas. USC has been on Jackon’s trail for some time now, and bringing in Del Rio would almost certainly ensure Jackson signing with the Trojans.
So why aren’t Chris Peterson, Jim Harbaugh and Kyle Whittingham gaining consideration for the job? Power brokers at the school know that hot coaching prospects aren’t going to want to deal with NCAA sanctions which are likely to hit the program in the spring. USC admins and boosters also know that Del Rio is desperate to take the job and will agree to give up a lot of control over the program, something Peterson, Harbaugh and Whittingham would be much less likely to consider.
Not to mention trying to followup Carroll’s extraordinary success.
USC Reportedly Interested In Mike Riley As Coach Sports by Brooks
ESPN’s Bruce Feldman reports this afternoon that prominent representatives of USC are attempting to contact Mike Riley to gauge his interest in the Trojans football coaching job. Feldman also Tweeted:
IF Pete Carroll leaves USC, look the Trojans to make a run at #Oregon St coach Mike Riley. Fast. Trojan brass loves him, I’m told.
Sam Farmer of the LOS ANGELES TIMES reports today that current USC Coach Pete Carroll interviewed with the Seattle Seahawks about their coaching position last week.
Farmer:
A Seahawks contingent including CEO Tod Leiweke interviewed Carroll in Los Angeles earlier this week to gauge his interest in replacing Mora.
Chris Mortensen added on ESPN this afternoon that he would be “surprised if Pete Carroll isn’t the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.” Mortensen also said a deal could be in place as soon as early next week.
So what’s the feeling around here in Los Angeles about Carroll you ask?
In the past, whenever Carroll’s name has been linked to NFL jobs, USC fans have wigged. I took many calls from sports radio callers on ESPN 710 during those times and Trojan fans were spooked. But there’s an eerie calm emanating from most SC fans about the Seahawks revelation.
With the falloff of the team’s performance and the pending NCAA investigations into the program, I don’t think the majority of USC fans at this moment would vigorously object to swapping out Carroll for Riley.
Ryan Abraham, publisher of the largest USC football site on the web, USCFootball.com, said this of Riley to me:
“Riley is a popular guy around USC. He not only has had success on the field against the Trojans, he is well liked and a geniune person.”
Riley has been considered for the USC job before, and is a Southern California guy. Perhaps this is the perfect time for him to ascend to the helm of the west coast’s signature college football factory. With all Riley’s been through, he might be the right person at the right time to tie up Carroll’s loose ends and re-energize the program. ------------------------------------------
Oh, and as I was posting this SBB just tweeted this:
QUOTE
# USC admin source tells me Riley #1 candidate. Jack Del Rio and Jeff Fisher also of interest. 12 minutes ago from TweetDeck
RT @PeteThamelNYT: I'm on campus at U.S.C. Pete Carroll hasn't been here all day. Not a lot of optimism that he's staying. 15 minutes ago from TweetDeck
A source close to the situation has told The Seattle Times that Washington QB Jake Locker will return to UW for his senior season.
This jibes with other reports that Locker has been leaning toward returning, including the comments of Washington AD Scott Woodard this morning to the Times that he was "very optimistic'' that Locker would return for another year.
This is huge news for the UW, which will return a QB who has been listed as being among the top draft picks for 2010 had he decided to come out.
Locker has apparently begun informing people this morning that he is returning.
UPDATE --- And just as I posted this, the school sent out a release saying that Locker has decided to return.
In that release, Locker said that: "After a great deal of careful thought and deliberation, I have decided to return to Washington and play my senior year. I am very excited about this team's opportunities and potential for the upcoming season and I am looking forward to being a part of it."
Very, very moving story of a young kid who lost both his eyes and how Carroll and the USC players embraced him into their family. ESPN GameDay managed to take 10 minutes out of their Tim Tebow cum guzzle fest to show this and even the Gay-tor fans were chanting "Jake! Jake!" when it was over. Goes to show that kids are some of the strongest people on Earth.
Johnson, a senior from Compton, was bench-pressing with a spotter in Heritage Hall’s weight room when the bar slipped out of his right hand and fell at an angle onto his throat. USC’s athletic trainers and emergency personnel rushed to the scene, and Johnson was taken to a local hospital, where he’s currently undergoing surgery on his throat.
Head strength and conditioning coach Chris Carlisle, who was within 10 feet of the incident, said he was shocked something like this could happen.
“I’ve seen players have the bar slip and fall onto their chest, but never in my 25 years of coaching have I heard of someone dropping a bar on their throat,” Carlisle said. “We’re fortunate he was being spotted.”
“It was an unfortunate accident and Stafon is getting great care right now,” Coach Pete Carroll said. “We don’t have a lot of information at this point and we’ll keep everyone updated, but our thoughts and prayers are with Stafon.”
The bench press is commonly regarded as one of the safest exercises in the weight room, especially with a spotter, Carlisle said. An assistant strength and conditioning coach was spotting Johnson this morning.
Johnson’s recovery time from surgery is unknown at this time.
Weightlifting throat Monday morning bench pressing with spotter. bar slipped out of rt hand and fell out of his hand at an angle.
UPDATE: ESPN college football analyst and former USC player Brandon Hancock Tweets: “One source close to Stafon’s mother has said operation may require permanent tracheostomy. Cannot confirm if true. Very serious. Will update.”
(Hancock is a former USC player and current ESPN analyst)
A tracheostomy is a surgical procedure that opens a direct airway through an incision in the trachea (the windpipe).
UPDATE: WeAreSC.com has a note posted from a board-certified head and neck surgeon (Otolaryngology) who is not privy to details of Johnson’s condition but is able to present the likely scenarios facing Johnson in emergency surgery.
UPDATE: Official USC football site USC RIPS IT reports Stafon Johnson is currently in emergency surgery after suffering a neck injury in a weightlifting accident this morning. When Johnson was injured, he did have a spotter when a bar slipped out of his hand “at an angle.”
ESPN 710’s Mason & Ireland report Johnson was bench-pressing 275 pounds at the time. Fox Sports Radio’s Petros Papadakis called the injury “career-threatening.” -------------------------------------------------
Holy ****. I can't even imagine the pain associated with 225lbs landing on your throat. Hope he's OK.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley is still unable to throw in practice, increasing the possibility the freshman won't start the No. 3 Trojans' upcoming game at Washington.
Although the bone bruise in Barkley's right shoulder felt much better Tuesday than it did after last week's victory at Ohio State, sophomore Aaron Corp worked with USC's first-team offense for the second straight day.
Barkley, who burst into national attention with his fourth-quarter play against the Buckeyes despite the injury, was held out of throwing drills.
"I tried this morning, and it felt pretty bad," Barkley said. "I can't really bring my shoulder back. ... I thought I was going to be able to throw today, but it has gotten better. I think it's progressing."
Coach Pete Carroll didn't set a deadline for naming a starting quarterback, but he praised Corp's practice performance.
"We'll make the determination when it seems right," Carroll said.
Safety Taylor Mays also missed practice for the second straight day with a sprained right knee ligament, but the senior All-American plans to suit up Saturday in his hometown before deciding whether to miss a game for the first time in his college career.
Barkley was hurt in the second half of USC's 18-15 victory in Columbus, but he stayed in the game to lead the decisive 86-yard drive in the final minutes. Although he can't throw, he has studied the film of the drive that instantly carved out a small place in USC history for him - and even more clearly for tailback Joe McKnight, who did most of the work.
"Still the same thought: it was crazy," Barkley said. "It was awesome. ... I thought I played well. There were about two or three reads that I messed up on. There were bringing it with their blitzes and fronts, but I thought it was good."
Barkley beat out Corp for the chance to replace Mark Sanchez during training camp, but the freshman was helped when Corp developed a small crack in a bone below his left knee during USC's third practice. Though Corp returned to practice several days later, he's only five weeks through a projected six-week path to full recovery.
Corp believes he's about "95 percent," saying he can do just about anything the coaches require.
"I definitely feel like the starter, at least pretending to be," Corp said. "If I can keep playing well and give our team a chance to get better, that's what I'll do."
Corp would add new dimensions to the Trojans' offense. He's a more aggressive runner than Barkley, with USC linebacker Chris Galippo describing the Orange County product as the toughest running quarterback he ever played against in high school.
That mobility is one reason Carroll was hesitant to use Corp until his leg was more fully healed, although Corp didn't see it that way.
"I was ready last week, ready two weeks ago," Corp said. "If they need me, I'll feel good."
Mays plans to wear a brace on his knee when he goes through pregame warmups at Husky Stadium. The Seattle native doesn't attach any special meaning to his final college game there, but he hasn't missed a game in his entire career at USC, starting every contest except the first game of his freshman season.
Carroll said Mays would be much more likely to play without practicing than Barkley, given Mays' experience in the USC system. If Mays can't play, backup Drew McAllister looks ready to go after missing last week's game with a hip injury.
Mays said his knee was "just a little stiff, and it feels uncomfortable. Maybe when the ball is snapped, I won't even feel it. Hopefully I'll be tough enough to get through it."
Because I live on the east coast I don't catch many Cal games, but when I have this man has ran like a straight up BEAST. Alot of people have been talking about him being in the Heisman talk this year, and I'm just curious...does he have a real chance? Its about time Cal football gets a little spotlight.
