While Tim Brewster has had his share of detractors in his first two seasons at the University of Minnesota, he has achieved his main goal of upping the recruiting profile of the Gophers and trying to keep the best homegrown prospects in state.
While he’s lost out on big name recruits like Michael Floyd, Brewster has done a nice job bringing in high profile players from battlegrounds like Florida and Ohio, and kept many top local players in state. As the Gophers open up their new on campus stadium this season, Brewster has entered the battle of his career, going hard for blue-chip recruit Seantrel Henderson, who Rivals has named their number one recruit for the class of 2010. The gigantic left tackle prospect is also a AAU basketball star, and Brewster is enlisting the help of Minnesota’s most popular coach to help talk Henderson into staying home.
According to a Star Tribune report, Brewster has told Henderson he can play basketball for the Gophers as well as football, and will be co-recruiting the 6′8″ athlete with basketball coach Tubby Smith, who has brought the basketball team back from the abyss and put them into the NCAA tournament.
While many think that Henderson will follow former Cretin-Derham Hall teammate Michael Floyd to Notre Dame, he’s being recruited nationally and will be keeping his options open for the time being. ----------------------------------------------------
Seantrel is such a ****ing beast. If he stays home it will be the biggest recruit in Minnesota history. Literally and figuratively.
I can see it both ways, one being that some kids won't even qualify and he wants to get the best talent, but on the other hand, he is promising kids the opportunities and then may retract it once he gets all the guys he wants and then the recruit is left hanging, looking around while other schools have already finalized their lists.
Division I-A teams are allowed a maximum of 85 scholarship players on the roster and can sign a limit of 25 athletes each year, but the numbers are not adding up at North Carolina.
Butch Davis' team will lose 12 scholarship seniors after it completes the 2008 season by playing West Virginia in the Meineke Bowl on Dec. 27. But Davis and his staff already have 24 commitments for next season and are still recruiting. What gives?
Yes, Butch is probably going to run players who are not up to standard, bringing back memories of Nick Saban, who went ballistic in April when asked about his fuzzy math. But all is forgotten in Alabama after a 12-1 regular season.
In the case of Davis, he would appear to be on course to set a new standard for over-recruiting, even with tricks like gray shirting or medical hardships. The Tar Heel coach's tactics have caught the attention of rival North Carolina State and its recruiting coordinator, Jerry Petercuskie.
"We're not in the market of oversigning, unless there's a case where there are some borderline students who may not make it," he said. "And in that case, there's a plan for them."
This gets to the heart of the matter. Recruiting is about building trust. If you can't be trusted to honor a commitment, your reputation takes a hit.
Is this where Davis and his staff want to take the program?
OSU has a ton of quality recruits coming in next year. Im looking forward to next season. As you can tell I cut and pasted but you get the picture. If you want to actually look at an individual team here\'s the link.
Seriously....?? 13!!!! Kids have enough pressures on them, this is getting ridiculous....
Nothing unusual about coaches making scholarship offers to prospects this time of year. Hawaii coach Greg McMackin recently made one to Reeve Koehler, a 6-foot-4, 280-pound line prospect from Kaneohe, Hawaii.
Here's the catch: Koehler is 13 and has yet to play his first game in pads. The offer makes the eighth-grader the most sought-after prospect in the class of 2013.
Andy Staples of SI.com writes that Koehler could receive more interest after Sunday, when he plays his first regulation, 11-on-11 game in pads in the Football University Youth All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The game will be streamed live at Football University.org beginning at 9 a.m. (Central).
Koehler's brother, Solomon, is a freshman offensive lineman at Arizona.
The young Koehler could have competition in the class of 2013. Thayer Evans and Pete Thamel of the New York Times report on several of the 143 prospects at Sunday's All-American Bowl, including Wes Medeiros, 13, who kicked a 45-yard field goal at the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp in August, video of which you can see after the jump.
Rated the number overall QB as well as overall player according to many sources, including rivals.com. Is said to be a pro-style QB, and has a very strong arm. This kid can be put into any system, and with the talented tools he is gifted with, he can make any play at any time.
Commitment: Solid Verbal To USC
Others Schools that were being considered: Stanford, Tennessee, UCLA,Washington, California,Colorodo,Florida State
lol, I have to say, the coaching staff for UCLA sure has brought some excitement back in this rivalry for years to come...
USC assistant Ken Norton Jr. lashed out at UCLA for allegedly using him as bait to lure recruits to Westwood and discourage them from joining the Trojans.
Oregon's Patrick Chung is one of only five players left on the Duck roster who participated in a recruiting weekend that will forever be remembered by not only the players, but NCAA regulators.
It was Jan. 9-11, 2004, and Oregon sent out a fleet of chauffeured cars and private jets to bring 25 recruits to Eugene. Thirteen of the players ended up signing with the Ducks and the five who are left — rover Chung, linebacker Jerome Boyd, defensive tackle Ra'Shon Harris, offensive tackle Jake Hucko and special teams standout Willie Glasper — will participate in Tuesday night's Holiday Bowl.
After Tuesday, only Glasper will have eligibility left.
After arriving in Eugene, all of the players were treated to dinner at the Oregon Electric Station. Hucko told Rob Moseley of the Eugene Register-Guard that he "definitely had a couple of lobster tails."
Oregon spent $150,000 on that recruiting weekend and when the details got out — along with scandals at Colorado and Miami — the NCAA decided to crack down with regulations that banned the use of private jets, souped-up cars and excessive meals during official visits.
It was a blow to Oregon's program because getting commercial flights to Eugene can be difficult for many players.
A terrific piece by Thayer Evans of the New York Times, who gained exclusive access to the recruitment of Jamarkus McFarland, a top defensive tackle prospect from Lufkin, Texas.
McFarland visited Texas, Oklahoma, USC and Louisiana State before selecting the Sooners on Thursday. The recruiting process was paved with an offer for an interest-free loan for his mother, a wild party in Dallas where "girls were acting wild by taking off their tops and pulling down their pants," a ride in a Hummer stretch limousine, a meeting with a university president and recruiting hostesses sitting on the laps of prospects.
It came down to Oklahoma and Texas for McFarland, whose mother vowed to never set foot in Norman again after visiting the campus with her son in April. But Sooner defensive line coach Jackie Shipp built up a relationship with McFarland's mother and on Christmas it paid off, with McFarland selecting the Sooners.
Did he really think UCLA wouldn't suspect something? UCLA told a recruit from New Jersey to take a hike after the defensive lineman, who is committed to Notre Dame, requested a layover in Chicago, presumably to visit Notre Dame on UCLA's dime.
My Scouting Report: Saw this kid perform in many games this year as I have seen him play, this can can hit, and I mean hit the heck out of anyone! Hes got the tools to be a dominant Linebacker, and will be a force at the college level in my opinion.
Schools Hes Considering ( In Order): Boston College,Clemson,Florida,Illinois,LSU,Maryland,Miami,Michigan,Notre Dame ( 6 other schools after that)
