NFLs most overrated players (or coaches)

What players in the NFL do you believe that their hype/prestige exceeds their talent? Let the burning begin.

My first guy is Aldon Smith.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the kid sucks. He's a very talented player but I don't think his talent lived up to his hype this past season. The amount of hype Aldon Smith was generating was ridiculous. I was on the hype train too. I even believed that he would break Strahans single season sack record. But the proof is in the pudding. Aldon Smith went ballistic and generated 15 sacks in just 7 games. Then, Justin Smith went down. After Smith went down, Aldon Smith failed to record a sack for the rest of the regular season; 3 games. Then in the play offs, Aldon Smith failed to record a sack in the Divisional Round, NFC Championship game, and the Superbowl. He went on a 6 game sack drought after Justin Smith went down. From watching the games, you saw how Justin being gone altered Aldon's effectiveness. The drop off in production was just too steep for it not to be a coincidence after the sack numbers he was putting up in earlier in the season. Like I said though, great talent; just a tad bit overrated.

NFL Closer To 18 Game Season?

Quote

http://espn.go.com/n...d-roger-goodell
Cutting two games off the preseason -- either by expanding the playoffs or moving to an 18-game schedule -- is still being discussed, commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday at the NFL's spring owners meetings in Boston.

He said all "[options] are on the table."

"As I have said before, I think the structure of the season is something that we consistently reevaluate," he said. "I have been quite open about [indicating that] we have to address the quality of the preseason.

"I hear from fans consistently that they want to make every NFL event more valuable. They see the preseason as being less valuable to them because they don't see the best players and the games do not count," he said. "We have to address that, whether we are looking at 18 [regular-season games] and two [preseason games] or 16-and-two and expanded playoffs."

When asked about playoff expansion, Goodell said the NFL has asked the competition committee "to look at it." He said there was "a lot of discussion" on the topic and the league had a brief report at the March owners meetings, but talks on the topic didn't happen Tuesday.

"We are going to continue to have more dialogue with the players' association, which is a big part of that discussion, and the second is with broadcast partners," he said.

If the league expands the playoff field or moves to an 18-game regular season, the date of the Super Bowl might have to be shifted back.

Perhaps with that in mind, Goodell said the league is "holding multiple dates" for Super L, which was awarded Tuesday to San Francisco, and Super Bowl LI, awarded to Houston, in response to a question about what the anticipated dates were for those title games.

Under Appreciated Players

Hmm, figured this might be a good idea. Don't think we have one of these yet. But use this thread to name players who you feel don't get the credit they deserve. More times than not, these will probably be guys that don't have the flashy stats, the big contracts, or the eye-popping numbers... But I suppose there are instances where elite players don't get their due credit.

Pick the players from your team, from other teams, doesn't matter.

I am going to start with a Packers corner.... Sam Shields.

The kid was an UDFA out of Miami. His man cover skills are darn good, and he has the ability to cover wideouts either in the slot or on the outside. He has great hands and an exceptional field of vision. Very athletic in his own right, he just always seems to be around the ball. He's going to be due a very nice contract here soon, but as it sits, the Packers tendered him at a 2nd round pick, won't extend him for the money he wants, and has now refused to show up to OTAs. Unfortunate...

NFL Player Appreciation

When it's all said and done, what players are you glad you got an opportunity to watch play on gameday? Who was the most entertaining, electrifying, or players game you respected the most?

For my list, it's players that put in a lot of work (at least like 5 years), history, legacies, extremely unique, or revolutionary.

Retired Players

Barry Sanders
Brian Dawkins
Marvin Harrison
Ray Lewis
Rod Woodson
Derrick Brooks
Simeon Rice
Chris Carter
Ladanian Tomlinson
Marshall Faulk
Isaac Bruce
Ty Law
Torry Holt
Shaun Alexander

Current Players

Adrian Peterson
Randy Moss
Terrell Owens
Ed Reed
Peyton Manning
Larry Fitzgerald
Tony Gonzalez
Drew Brees
Aaron Rodgers
Patrick Willis
Charles Woodson
DeMarcus Ware
Steve Smith
Trent Cole
Reggie Wayne
Champ Bailey
Asante Samuel- loved him as an eagle even though he sucked at tackling
Devin Hester
Dwight Freeney
Darrelle Revis
Julius Peppers
Brian Urlacher
Lance Briggs
Troy Polamalu
Calvin Johnson
Andre Johnson
Chad Johnson
Steven Jackson
John Abraham
Michael Vick- People can say what they want about Vick but it's no denying he was one of the most electrifying players in the league with the Falcons. Revolutionary at the QB position with play making ability with his legs. Pretty sure everyone remembers the Mike Vick experience

I probably wind up going a little over board with my list but the names kept continuing to rush into my head. I'm pretty sure I forgot a few as well. But when it's all said and done, I appreciate the fact that I got to watch these players play and watched football during this era.

Who are the 5 most important players to your team?

For the

1. Darrelle Revis- Pretty obvious. This guy is an absolute stud and if he can stay healthy, he should significantly improve our pass defense. If he were to go down, our CB situation would look pretty damn shitty.

2. Gerald McCoy- McCoy makes a huge difference to our defense and is one of the main reason's why we ranked #1 against the run last year. If he were to go down, we would be in deep trouble, especially because our depth behind McCoy at DT sucks.

3. Vincent Jackson- V-Jax is a monster WR who really stretches our offense. He is big, strong and quick and if the ball is in his area, he will usually come down with it. He's a true #1 WR which we have been lacking for years and if he were to go down, it would be a huge blow to our offense.

4. Doug Martin- Great RB who I am expecting big things from next year. A lot of people say RB's are easily replaceable, but Martin is a stud and if he were to go down, I would not trust Mike James to come anywhere close to the production that Martin will give us.

5. Josh Freeman- The QB. Time for Freeman to show us who he really is. This season really comes down to Freeman's play. If Freeman plays well, we probably make the playoffs and he gets an extension. If he plays poorly, we miss the playoffs and we are searching for a new QB.
