Pete Prisco@PriscoCBS From what I hear Maurice Jones-Drew wants a new deal and has made it known he's nuts about that. Is that why he's no there for camp!

Meanwhile, at Gene Smith's office...

*hears a knock at the door*

"Hmm, wonder who that could be..."

*walks to the door and opens it*

"Oh, hello Mr. Richardson, come on in."

Wouldn't worry about something like this if true as of yet. Its still very early and he usually trains by himself in California in the off season

When the Jaguars kicked off their offseason workouts last month, they did it without running back Maurice Jones-Drew.

His absence came as a surprise to coach Mike Mularkey and was reportedly due to dissatisfaction with a contract that is set to pay him $4.45 million this season. He’s got another year on the deal as well with the problem stemming from the fact that Jones-Drew is paid less than other, less prouductive running backs. Jones-Drew is a vital part of the Jaguars offense, but there doesn’t seem to be any movement toward a resolution that will bring Jones-Drew back into the fold.

Mark Long of the Associated Press and Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union each report that Jones-Drew will not be in Jacksonville when the team starts organized training activities on Tuesday. The news isn’t unexpected given the lack of any indication that there was a change in plans coming from the running back. All eyes will now turn toward the June minicamp, the first mandatory work of the offseason and the first time when any acrimony would really be forced to the surface.

The Jaguars have taken some steps toward boosting their offense this offseason by drafting Justin Blackmon and signing Laurent Robinson. Not having Jones-Drew at the top of his game would do a lot to limit the effectiveness those moves wind up having on Jacksonville’s record.

I don't blame him for trying to get his deal while he can. RB's don't last long in the NFL. Especially RB's of his size with his workload.

I am also shocked when I go look up Mojo's stats because for SOME reason -- not really sure why -- I always think he is older than he actually is. Dude is 27 and one of the most consistent and all-purpose backs in the league.

PAY THAT MAN.

Why isn't he considered a douchebag like Revis when he signed a big extension recently as well?

Probably because MJD doesn't mouth off about how great he is.

I say he deserves a big pay day as well. But this is from a guy whose team can't seem to give their QB a big payday he deserves

For one, MoJo signed his deal in 2009... So he's played 09, 10, and 11 under his current deal. He's FAR FAR outplayed that contract. And I don't even remember him holding out last time... There were threats, but didn't he sign before the draft?

EDIT:

And who exactly makes more money than Revis at CB right now?

Revis got 4 years, 46 million, 32 million guaranteed (70% of his total deal)
Aso got 5 years, 60 million, but only 25 million guaranteed (42% of total)

EDIT II:

Couple other guys who got paid at CB this year.

Cortland Finnegan:
5 years, 50 millions, 25 million guaranteed (50% of total)

Brandon Carr:
5 years, 50.1 million, 25.5 guaranteed (50% of total)

Eric Wright:
5 years, 38 million, 15.5 guaranteed (41% of total)

The NFL rushing champion in 2011, Jones-Drew has two years and $9.5 million remaining on the five-year, $31.35 million deal he signed in 2009. At 27, the time is now to get that last payday before he nears 30, a dreaded age for running backs looking to make money.

The Jaguars are unlikely to work with Jones-Drew on this. For one, they're likely thrilled with the fact than an All-Pro is locked into an extremely team-friendly deal. And then there's the issue of durability. Team sources told CBSSports.com they feel Jones-Drew isn't nearly as explosive as he used to be.

When the Jags went under new ownership, all we heard about was all this money they were going to have now and how they (Jags) were no longer afraid to spend that money on the team.

Yet... Here we are. One of the best players in franchise history, who is still in the prime of his career and coming off a rushing title and they don't want to show him the money.

Oh, and Laurent Robinson... Who hasn't done anything for the Jaguars or any other team and he gets 30 million from the Jaguars.

Great logic.

Over pay a guy who has done nothing. Don't pay the guy that means everything to your team.

And this is why the Jags suck... other than drafting Blaine Gabbert.

He probably WILL lose a step in 2-3 years. They give him a TON of carries and he's not the biggest guy, but how does this look to guys who you apparently have all this money to sign? This is just a poor poor decision by Jags management.

Well ya Sean, I think it is safe to say he is going to lose a step when he hits the all dreaded "30". But he isn't there yet and won't be for a few more years.

Yeah but backs these days don't get the carries MJD has been getting so his time could be even less due to the size of his frame.

I am not saying Laurent Robinson is going to be a bad player. But that doesn't change the fact that the Jaguars overpaid for him while they won't pay the face of their franchise.

Oh... And don't forget that you don't have Tony Romo (or any other remotely mediocre player) at the QB position.

And @Sean, absolutely. Not often do you see a guy who is around 400 touches a year. It's a dangerous precedent to set, but he still has a lot to give. :yep:

the jags probably did over pay a little but thats was because the Redskins rose the price on the FA wrs and there was only 1 true elite wr. i think robinsons deal is much better than garcons but it doesnt matter whos the qb. actually the jags do atleast 2 mediocore qbs on the roster(Henne was playing good and bad last year but ended up with a 70+ passer rating). gabbert without all the drops not to mention that weak WR corps we had really hurt him. also doesnt help that Guy whimper was his rt because brittons hurt

They are taking a huge gamble on Robinson.

He was a #3 WR with a very good QB throwing him the ball. If they want him to be their #1, he's going to have to line up across from the other team's best CB. We have no idea if he can do that, since before he was lining up across from their #3 CB.
