Stan Van Gundy has been relieved of his head coaching duties from the Orlando Magic.
Otis Smith, the Magic GM, has also been let go in the front-office shakeup clearly made to appease franchise cornerstone Dwight Howard. Van Gundy, who had a 259-135 (.657) record in five seasons in Orlando, made the best of a difficult situation all year with the Howard contract saga hanging over the team and will probably have no problem finding another head coaching gig. Despite coaching the team to an NBA Finals in 2009, Howard had lost patience with Van Gundy, and no matter what the front office says, D-12 will have a big say in who the next coach of Orlando will be. The Magic will hold a press conference at 4:30 ET on Monday to discuss the situation in further detail.

Good riddance to Otis, but I'll miss Stan.

Gundy is a horrible coach to me. Yeah his record may not be bad, but he has a way of just being fired from a team.

I disagree, SVG is a top 5 coach in the NBA. He is always prepared and gets the most out of our players. Despite a wouned roster without Dwight, we gave the Pacers a solid fight in the playoffs, I give a lot of credit to him for that. He is fired because Dwight was tired of him and his loud voice. I think firing Otis was long overdue, but SVG is a good coach and I'll miss him. We'll see who gets hired, but please NO MIKE D'ANTONI.

I don't think he's a top 5 coach in the NBA..There are a bunch of coaches who are better than him..

Name them then. Pop and Thib are the only two I'd take over SVG for sure. A few may be in the same mix, but SVG is up there. He's done a great job in Orlando and did a great job with a young Miami team years ago too.

I think it's terrible timing to fire a coach of Stan's quality directly after Dwight has back surgery. Unless they get somebody just as good (or better), this could turn ugly fast.

Is Howard even going to stay healthy?

Amare (Stoudemire) has been nagged by chronic knee and back issues since before leaving Phoenix and he hasn't been operating at 100% since.

Howard is going to be EXCITED to see a max deal offer from Orlando this offseason. Another reason why this is terrible timing for the Magic. They have the leverage now, but who knows what you are going to get in return.

They could surprise us though if they bring in a really solid group of players in the offseason. The cast there now is very mediocre, and that might be overstating their talent level a little.

Today begins a new era of Magic basketball and there really are a ton of different ways this can pan out. I guess we just have to wait around and see what cards they are dealt.

Anyways:

“Let me say in no uncertain terms that Dwight did not want to be part of this decision,” Martins said at a televised press conference announcing the firings. “He did not want to make this decision. He never asked me to make this decision. Yes, (the Howard/Van Gundy) relationship was a challenge, but Dwight Howard never asked me to fire Stan Van Gundy.”

They made Stan the scapegoat, and that's pure cowardice. Just like his brother, Stan Van Gundy is an incredibly underrated coach. So he yells. Phil Jackson talks philosophical nonsense in meetings and he has 10 rings. Thibs yells til he's hoarse. Adelman runs a read and react offense. The best coaches in the game aren't traditional coaches.

So they admitted on the radio they might not find as good of a strategist as Stan, but that he was fired for being a poor "people person."

I guess they didn't get the memo that some of the best coaches in all of sports, not just basketball, aren't seen as "good people persons."

They've never seen Pop give a between quarters interview.

Mike Brown as a head coach sucks. He would be on the NBAs best defensive coaches though as an assistant.

I'd take Pop, Thibs, Doc, Scott Brooks, George Karl, Rick Carlisle and Adelman all over SVG. IMO not top 5 but definitely top 10.

Magic are making a mistake here but I guess it was inevitable.

Like I said, Pop and Thibs are the only guys I'd take over him for sure. Doc, Carlisle, Brooks, etc. are in the same breath with SVG and you can make cases either way. Mike Brown is a joke.

I think Brian Shaw is the favorite to be HC. Former Lakers assistant under Phil Jackson, everyone was suprised when they didn't let him take over after Phil stepped down. He went off to the Pacers this year. He is supposedly someone Dwight wants and is also a former Magic player.

As for GM. Kevin Pritchard, Donnie Walsh and Jeff Bower are names I hear a lot. People keep bringing up Adonal Foyle too, but that just sounds so retarded which is why I half expect it to happen lol.

I think Carlisle and Adelman are in that same area as SVG. Stan's track record is pretty impressive and it is disappointing for him to go like this.

The Orlando Magic are expected to begin their search for a new general manager/president of basketball operations on Tuesday. Sources say the team has already reached out to several candidates and is ready to begin the interview process. Orlando is expected to hire a new general manager within the next two weeks and have him put his input on the search for a new coach. Donnie Walsh, David Morway, Kevin Pritchard and Jeff Bower are popular candiates.
