It's that time again, music lovers of the Palace. While previous tournaments have dubbed Jimi Hendrix the greatest rock guitarist and Chris Squire the greatest rock bassist, it's time to move on to the guys banging on the drums.

Nominations for the tournament will work exactly as they have previously: each TGP member may nominate up to 25 drummers, and you may designate a top 5. The top 5 makes seeding a little more precise: a nomination is worth 1 point, but a top 5 designation is worth 2 points. Note that you do not have to nominate 25 drummers, and your top tier does not have to contain five drummers. As always, feel free to edit your post after you've made it as more names come to you. This thread will stay open for awhile.

My ballott:

John Bonham
Neil Peart
Danny Carey
Mike Portnoy
----------------------
Ginger Baker
Nick Mason
Keith Moon
Mitch Mitchell
Ringo Starr
Bill Ward
Ian Paice
Nicko McBrain

Will update later.

Nicko McBrain.

And where is the thread for rock guitarist because I disagree with Jimi Hendrix as the greatest rock GUITARIST.

You're not the only one. Hendrix beat out Eric Clapton 13-9 in the final poll. If you scan through this forum (General Entertainment), you can see all the polls. Here's the general discussion/nomination thread, though: http://www.thegridir...y/page__st__40.

80's hair band days

Eric Carr (my personal favorite)
Alex Van Halen
Tommy Lee
Rick Allen (man had one arm and still found a way to play drums)
Charlie Watts (not really 80's drummer but he was the Rolling Stones drummer)

Most of the others I would mention have already been mentioned.

One name I feel obligated to throw out there is Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall. He's a very subtle giant on the kit. Only when you listen closely and here the complexity of his fills, cymbal work, and double-bass work will you hear his genius. I really appreciate that. You have to really listen to him to understand just how complicated the things he's doing are.

Neil Peart and John Bonham.

Peart gets a slight edge because he is so technical proficient.

just so it is clear--I didn't read a single post on this thread, just read the title...

I bet he is mentioned..if he isn't, then shame on you...

neil peart..absolutely the most musical drummer on the planet,,you may be excellent at double bass parts doing 32nd notes at 160 BPM, but could you construct drum parts like peart does?? can you make your drumset fit a song like him?..

no, you cannot..

If this tourney comes down to anything but a Bonham vs. Peart final, it'll be a shame, honestly.

I don't know man Taylor Hawkins is also an amazing drummer. Dave Grohl as well. But yes I do think the final should be Peart vs Bonham

yeah, to be honest i am more of an older fan, than some of the new stuff that some memebrs are doing like redemption and osi..saw a matheos/arch video the other day, and i actually liked it..somehow it fit to hear arch singing like he does over something matheos wrote..ivory gate of dreams has been on e of my favs for a long time...paraells is a great album too, zonder shines on it, such depth..but I can't do without my no exit cd...LOL!...

and if it comes down to bonham/peart--sorry zep fans, this isn't a popularity contest, or it shouldn't be..peart can do anything bonham did, and a million things more he can't...maybe a million squared...

peart, in a landslide...I mean-huge landslide..no contest, unless you want popularity to count.but that's my take...

some excellent technicians also--of course mike portnoy, and his replacement mangini in dream theather...

notice some mentioned gene hoglan, dave lombardi...are we crossing into thrash/metal;/death/black metal as well?...

enter hellhammer then and also enter the original drummer from fear factory can't remember his name right off...his feet sound liek popcorn popping...

many of the european black/satanic norweigian bands have excellent drummers as far as double bass mastery..dimmu borgir and bands like those.

but like the above poster mentions, the prog drummers by nature of what they are asked to do, cover more ground and have to master just about every technique used from multiple genres often in the same song, from a 16th note quads double bass parts to a jazz sound instantly...play loud as hell, then quiet...

bands such as the melodic metal/prof types, shadows fall/sonotica artica/symphony x/dragonforce styles have them too...

we are blessed with such great musicians to be honest, as those mentioned in this thread...I leave out the old heros from my true generation, because they ahve already been mentioned in here...

but I am happy to see such a sports fanbase know their stuff when it comes to music..often all you see is sports fans mention popular bands drummers, because they don't know any better--if they are on the radio, they must be good kinda thinking...

nope.doesn't work that way, and that is sad..the best--are usually unpopular, because simple stuff sells, to simple people..nobody wants to hear technical music while smoking a joint and chasing a bimbo, it would make them nervous..LOL!...ok-done rambling.

Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:31 PM) Fun fact: Only one second basemen has hit more home runs than Dan Uggla from the start of the 2010 season until now. Robinson Cano.
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:32 PM) But by all means, get rid of him. :smug:
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:43 PM) Dan Uggla sucks ass lol
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:44 PM) So being top 10 at your position means you suck?
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:45 PM) Bullshit. lol
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:45 PM) If Dan uggla is the worst player in your lineup, you don't have many problems. And clearly the Braves don't.
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:47 PM) Uggla hasn't had an OPS over .764 since 2010 lol
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:48 PM) rocking a cool .672 OPS this year to go along with a .179 batting average
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:49 PM) But I get it... HE HITZ DA DINGERZ!!!!11
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:50 PM) Sorry to disappoint you, but Uggla's OPS has been in the top 10 among second basemen for years... lmao.
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:50 PM) You are the weakest link. Goodbye.
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:51 PM) must be a pretty weak crop of 2nd basemen in the majors right now
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:52 PM) Second base isn't typically a position that features a lot of power hitters.
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:52 PM) really, how many good 2Bs are out there besides Cano, Kinsler, Phillips, Hill, Kipnis, etc?
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:52 PM) Guys like Cano aren't the norm at second base. :nope:
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:53 PM) there really aren't many stars at 2B
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:54 PM) I mean, the A's are still rolling with Adam fucking Rosales who should have been cut like 2 years ago... weak position
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:55 PM) As far as Uggla goes though, I know he's frustrating, but it's not really easy to find someone better than him.
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:55 PM) If I were a Braves fan, I'd live with the strikeouts knowing he's gonna probably end the year with around 25 homers. the batting average will come up some.
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:56 PM) well yeah, I can see that
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 01:56 PM) but still, it's not like Uggla should be regarded as a great player lol
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:57 PM) he's not a great player anymore, no.
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 01:59 PM) but given the weakness of the position, I'd take him over a lot of other guys.
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 02:00 PM) The defensive spectrum is: Designated hitter - First baseman - Left fielder - Right fielder - Third baseman - Center fielder - Second baseman - Shortstop - Catcher - Pitcher
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 02:01 PM) As you go from left to right, offense becomes slightly less important and defense becomes slightly more important.
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 02:04 PM) So if you've ever wondered why most of the premiere hitters are corner outfielders, first basemen, and third basemen, there ya go.
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:04 PM) Jedd Gyorko :smug:
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 02:06 PM) he's gonna be a good one
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:06 PM) Playing real well this month
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:07 PM) at least from what i saw in the broadcast last night
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:10 PM) lol Padres only have 4 batters in the top 150 hitters so far
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 02:12 PM) He'll probably end up at third base once headley is gone. I don't think Gyorko has the glove to stick at second base. But if he hits the way he is capable of, you kinda have to forgive his defense.
blotsfan  : (22 May 2013 - 02:12 PM) shouldnt teams on average have 5 batters in the top 15-?
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 02:12 PM) He could definitely be a .300 hitter with at least average power over his career.
blotsfan  : (22 May 2013 - 02:12 PM) *150
blotsfan  : (22 May 2013 - 02:13 PM) or are you talking about top 150 batters in the NL?
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:14 PM) no, all of baseball, yeah if you go by averages but when you look at each of their standings, only 2 are top 100
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:14 PM) Headley at 33 and Cabrera at 89
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:15 PM) Alonso is at 114 and Gyorko barely makes the cut at 148
blotsfan  : (22 May 2013 - 02:16 PM) i dunno, that sounds below average, but probably not the worst
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:17 PM) No, not the worst, if you looked at it last month it probably would have been a lot worse haha
Tridentdawgp...  : (22 May 2013 - 02:21 PM) BRAVES WIN! :sweep:
Tridentdawgp...  : (22 May 2013 - 02:21 PM) BenJarvus Gr... : (22 May 2013 - 02:43 PM) Dan Uggla sucks ass lol
Tridentdawgp...  : (22 May 2013 - 02:21 PM) Let's be best friends
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 02:22 PM) the A's are bailing this scrub ass pitcher out lol
BenJarvus Gr...  : (22 May 2013 - 02:22 PM) Ross fucking Wolf
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 02:23 PM) Padres have a decent lineup. They just gotta get used to playing with the new dimensions.
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:24 PM) There have been a lot more home runs so far
Socal  : (22 May 2013 - 02:24 PM) well, from the other team too :shifty:
Sarge+  : (22 May 2013 - 02:24 PM) I actually just picked up Will Venable for my fantasy team. I hope he keeps up the way he's been playing lately.
