Who would you take, if you could only take one?

Would it be the all-time leader in win, Don Shula?

The very first coach, George Halas?

Maybe someone more modern, like Bill Belichick?

The revolutionary mind of the West Coast offense, Bill Walsh?

Or maybe his mentor, the crafty Paul Brown?

The mastermind of the Steel Curtain, one Chuck Noll?

The Coach with the best winning percentage of all time, John Madden?

Perhaps one of the first two Cowboys coaches who combined for four championships, Tom landry and Jimmy Johnson?

Or maybe you'd just take the guy whom the super bowl trophy is named after, one Vince Lombardi?

Tell me, who would you take?

This is a tough question to me. With every passing decade it gets harder to be a HC. Athletes become more refined. I mean, linemen were 200 lbs during the Halas days. The game was a lot less complicated when Lombardi invented the screen. I think it's got to be Lombardi though. He won the most championships and half the hall of fame it seems like is full of guys he coached.

Bill Walsh totally changed how offense is played and most teams still use at least some of his ideas in their playbooks. Some teams still heavily rely on the WCO.

1. Bill Walsh
2. Vince Lombardi

Belichick could solidify the #3 spot with another championship or two, IMO.

Paul Brown was the originator of the WCO. I rant when people give credit to Bill Walsh --who was a great coach in his own right-- credit for the playbook. He learned the WCO from PB and then built on it.

It's funny how many ties the WCO has to Cleveland. Former Browns QB, Bernie Kosar, is credited for coining the term West Coast Offfense and Bill Bellicheck, the former coach for the Browns, is credited for coming up with the blueprint to stop the WCO.

Anywho, I choose Paul Brown because: I'm a home. Also because he had a team in 6 NFL championships, winning three, had a 167-53-8 record and had only one losing season in 17 years. He was the brain chid behind the WCO and is the only coach with a NFL team named after him...Oh and don't forget that he started another NFL franchise.

More facts about Paul Brown:

He was the first to :
  • intelligence tests as a hint to a player's learning potential
  • Use notebooks and classroom techniques extensively
  • Set up complete film clip statistical studies and
  • Grade his own players based on film study.
