Per Rotoworld.com:

Quote

LSU head coach Les Miles announced Friday that junior DB Tyrann Mathieu is "no longer on our team."
Miles added that "we'll miss him, but we have to go on." The head coach also noted that the decision is "permanent... he will not be back." Miles gave no specific reason other than it was "fundamental behavior" that led to the decision, but rumors circulated earlier that Mathieu failed another drug test, reportedly his third in three seasons. LSU "will help him try to find a place to play" next season, and the likeliest scenario is to move down a level of competition to an FCS program, similar to Janoris Jenkins. Aug 10 - 1:02 PM

CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman announced that if junior DB Tyrann Mathieu "became ineligible because of a third failed drug test, he will not be able to play this year at another NCAA school."
NCAA rules state that a player must be eligible at the school he is transferring from in order to be play at his new school. Therefore, this would prohibit Mathieu from playing the 2012 season at any level of NCAA competition. If this turns out to be the reason for Mathieu's dismissal, then the junior's likeliest landing spots are NAIA schools, but HBCU schools and even junior colleges have been mentioned. LSU head coach Les Miles did not disclose the reasoning for Mathieu's dismissal, instead calling it "fundamental behavior." Aug 10 - 1:33 PM

After speaking to people inside the NFL following LSU's dismissal of Tyrann Mathieu, CBS Sports' Mike Freeman passes along that "most" believe the junior is still a third- or fourth-round draft prospect.
Freeman also notes that the fourth-round projection is "at the latest" and that Mathieu is a "very divisive player among NFL teams." According to Freeman, "teams either really like him or they can't stand him. Not much middle ground." It makes sense, not only due to Mathieu's off field issues, but because he doesn't fit the traditional mold of a defensive back with his size and skill set. There will be plenty of variance in opinions from now until April, but first Mathieu needs to find a new team to play for. Aug 10 - 2:16 PM

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler talked to three NFL personnel members and each considered former LSU junior DB Tyrann Mathieu to be a first-round talent prior to today's dismissal.
One did specifically call the former Tiger a "fringe" first- or second-round talent, but none chose to comment on Mathieu's current draft status. Brugler went on to add that many outside, and even inside, the NFL do not consider Mathieu a top-40 talent, but certainly some do. He will remain one of the most polarizing prospects of the 2013 Draft. Aug 10 - 4:34 PM

He'll get every opportunity to play in the NFL. Just depends if he is going to take that for granted. We'll see.

Wasn't a day 2 pick anyways. Probably dropped his stock to like a 5th rounder now. Can't compare him to Janoris Jenkins because he can actually cover a receiver. Is it possible to be a ballhawk but be a liability in coverage?

^ To me he was anywhere between a late first to anywhere in the second before the incident. Now he's a third at the earliest.

I think with more bulk he could be pretty well playing in a Troy Polamalu role. Although the questionable speed to go with the height that I think was even slightly exaggerated by LSU's website are really working against him.

Looks like McNeese State may nab the honey badger.

Per Rotoworld:

Quote

Former LSU teammate Josh Jasper tweeted that junior DB Tyrann Mathieu is transferring to McNeese State.

McNeese State is part of the FCS level of the NCAA, so that means Mathieu was dismissed as an "eligible" player. It is similar to the move former Tennessee Vol Janzen Jackson made, who finished he college career at McNeese State before going undrafted in the 2012 Draft. Mathieu is staying in the state of Louisiana and is eligible to play immediately, that is if this transfer proves to be true. CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman seconded this report, but said Mathieu is still looking into it.

McNeese State officials have confirmed that head coach Matt Viator recently met with former LSU junior DB Tyrann Mathieu.

They added that a decision has yet to be made about the junior's future. A picture circulated early Saturday morning that featured Mathieu in the McNeese State field house, but no other information has been leaked at this time. Thus far, all signs point to the Honey Badger joining the Cowboys, whose campus is less than 150 miles from LSU's.

No choice but to boot the honey badger for his misbehavior come on guys drugs are a bad bad choice and when you cross the line you take the chance of missing the sign and now he's off the team for his selfish acts of drugs and so he made his decision and he paid for it. Now the Honey Badger is looking at a lower school to resume. Good Luck to him but still SMH. right move by Miles.

Tyrann Mathieu covets LSU return?
Updated: August 13, 2012, 11:20 AM ET
By Joe Schad | ESPN

Former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has expressed interest in sitting out this season, staying in class and hoping for a return to the program in 2013, if it can be worked out with the school, according to sources.

Mathieu was dismissed from the team and suspended for the season following failed substance-abuse tests but not dismissed by the university. The possibility of future reinstatement would have to be approved at many levels, including university administration and head coach Les Miles, and it is being discussed.

Mathieu has visited McNeese State, and that remains an option, according to a source close to Mathieu. And while other FCS schools including Jackson State and Prairie View A&M have expressed interest, they are not options at this time.

Mathieu has been described as "heartbroken" and "grieving" since his dismissal from the team.

Mathieu has told people close to him that he is interested in working on his maturity and character and also in seeking out any way to continue his education at LSU.

The possibility to declare for the NFL draft after this season also exists. But Mathieu has told people close to him that draft status it is not a priority at this time. If he were to stay at LSU, paying his own way for at least one season is a possibility.

BATON ROUGE - Tyrann "Honey Badger" Mathieu cannot return to the LSU football team at any time in the future, LSU senior associate athletic director for NCAA compliance Bo Bahnsen reiterated on Monday after an ESPN story stated there was a chance Mathieu could return for the 2013 season.

"He's permanently ineligible to play football at LSU," Bahnsen said in a telephone interview Monday afternoon. "That's definite. That's what was said Friday."
