Dolphins' Philbin: Cutting Johnson wasn't easy

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said wide receiver Chad Johnson was released for his "body of work" since he signed in June, and not solely for his domestic violence arrest over the weekend.

Philbin, who encouraged Johnson to use his fame to be a positive example on the first episode of HBO's "Hard Knocks" training camp documentary, claimed the move wasn't a simple one for the franchise to make. Miami signed Johnson days after he was released by the New England Patriots in June.

"With any type of these decisions, it was not an easy one," Philbin said. "It was not reactive, nor was it based on one single incident."

Linebacker Karlos Dansby told WMEN-AM radio in Miami that he wasn't please the team parted with Johnson.

"I hate that we didn't stand behind him," Dansby said. "I know the guys in the locker room would. But the organization felt a totally different way about the situation, and they probably had more information than we know. And they had to do what they had to do."

Johnson was arrested Saturday after a confrontation with his wife, Evelyn Lozada, in their car while parked in the driveway of their home. Police reports indicate the argument was allegedly over a receipt Lozada, a reality TV star who wedded Johnson a month earlier, found for a box of condoms while she was carrying groceries into the house. Lozada had a three-inch cut on her forehead she said occurred when Johnson head-butted her.

Lozada plans to press charges, according to police, and has received a protective order that prevents Johnson from contacting her. Johnson told police he was head-butted by his wife.

Once a dipshit, always a dipshit. He's always thought he's been hot shit ever since his Cincinatti days where he had a few good years, ever since he's been a damn deadbeat. Kinda hope this is the end of the line for him. At least TO hasn't done anything stupid yet

A few good years? That's an understatement. Chad was one of the leagues top receiver threats for a stretch during the 2000 era.

I can understand ppl may not like others for whatever reasons, but to hope it is the end for someone sounds like someone had a sip of some Haterade.

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Evelyn Lozada says Chad Johnson "needs help."

The reality star issued her first statement Tuesday since the football star's arrest for allegedly head-butting her. The altercation took place Saturday in the Miami area.

Lozada says she's "deeply disappointed" that her estranged husband hasn't taken responsibility for his actions. She says he made false accusations against her; Johnson told police she head-butted him.
Lozada says she hopes that by taking a stand, she will encourage other women to "break their silence" on the issue of domestic violence.

The two were married a little more than a month ago, and their nuptials were to be part of the VH1 reality show, "Ev & Ocho" -- but it's now been shelved.

Johnson was cut from the Miami Dolphins the day after his arrest.

If it is over, he had a good career. The ending sucked but he was blessed to have played in the NFL, had a good margin of success and made millions.

NFL Films got the entirety of his final conversation with Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin in his office Sunday night. The camera angle showed the men as they spoke one-on-one and included close-ups of Johnson's face as he processed his firing:

Quote

Johnson: "I let you down a little bit. A lot. I understand what you're doing, you got the message across clear the first day we met. ... I understood what you wanted from me and what you expected out of me, especially after our talk -- having fun with the media thing. I apologize for embarrassing you, this organization, my teammates."

Philbin: "I appreciate that. I respect that. I know you're very passionate, and I know you care about your profession. ... I do my best not to fly off the handle and act irrational. It's just, I don't know that this is working for the benefit of you, me, the Miami Dolphins or anybody else. I think you're a good person. Trust me, I acknowledge people make mistakes. Nobody knows that more than me."

Johnson: "Coach, I've never been in trouble before. Ever. And I buy into your program, most definitely. Because after that talk we had, I was hushed from that point on. And I was gonna stay that way the entire year."

Philbin: "It's not really just last night. It's where we are as a program, and where you are, and where we're headed. I just don't see the mesh right now. I wish it was different. I wish I could tell you something more encouraging, but I just think it's best for both of us that we kind of part ways at this point in time. It's not like I'm trying to flex my muscle, to say, 'I'm the head coach, and let's make an example of Chad Johnson.' It has nothing to do with that. It's more about how you fit in, and how we fit in together, and where this thing is heading. Just don't see it being where I thought it would be or what I hoped it would be. I'm sure it's not good news; it's not good news for us, either. But I'm certain you can overcome this thing."

Johnson: "Thank you for the opportunity. I've enjoyed myself. There's not much more I can say. I appreciate it, though. Thank you for the chance."

Philbin: "I wish we were having a different type of a conversation, I mean that. I wish you well, I really do."

The show ended with equipment managers cleaning out Johnson's locker.

However the lead-up to his dismissal was also intriguing.

Dolphins Director of Security Stuart Weinstein was shown talking to Philbin before the embattled wideout appeared at the team's facilities Sunday, a day after his arrest. "I just got a call from him, and he is choked up. His voice is cracking. He thinks you're gonna cut him," Weinstein tells Philbin before relaying that Johnson guessed, "This is probably gonna be my death penalty."

The coach responded, "He obviously has some inkling of what may be coming."

Philbin telegraphed his concerns about Johnson in the Hard Knocks premier last week and again cited the loquacious wideout's profanity and tweeting as problems (not to mention the dropped pass in the team's preseason opener).

Tonight's show also had an undertow of further struggles on the field for Johnson -- he couldn't shake CB Sean Smith in practice while lamenting his own mistakes -- and suggestions from QB David Garrard that the receiver was struggling with the playbook (an issue that dogged him last year in New England).

Yeah I saw it, it was pretty cool to see how it all went down. You just felt the tension when he came in to talk to coach Philbin and you could tell he knew that it was the end of the line and he just looked very remorseful and like he let Philbin and the Dolphins down.

Even though he is a complete moron, I could buy that she was the one who head butted him. But either way his career was over because he can't play anymore.

I don't think Carson Palmer has any desire to play with him again. I do hope that he wasn't arrested falsely. If theres ever a call made about domestic violence, the cops are legally required to arrest someone, even if both people claim that nothing happened.

That's not edit: entirely true.

There are department policies that require an arrest, it seems and some states have mandatory arrest laws (such as NY.) However However, to me that sounds like a recipe for disaster. Also, probable cause is still needed for an arrest.

Well the guy I talked to said theres been many cases where they're called for domestic violence, everyone denies it, and the abuser gets really pissed after the cops leave and kills her.

Yea I edited above. NY does have a mandatory arrest law. Its effectiveness is very debatable thoough.

Florida does not have a mandatory arrest law, but a "pro-arrest" policy which is a bridge between officer discretion and mandatory arrest.

edit: my blanket statement originally was apparently not informed enough, as I deal with domestic abuse calls on a regular basis and each is completely left to officer discretion, in that if there are no MARKS or signs of abuse, and the complainant refuses to press charges upon the police arrival odds are they are not going to make a battery arrest under the family violence act

The filter that we apply to story possibilities is getting thicker and thicker when it comes to receiver Chad Johnson, especially since no team has shown any interest in him in the four days since he was cut by the Dolphins. But the latest report regarding the situation merits a quick mention.

RadarOnline.com reports that a “source close to” Chad Johnson and his wife claims that Johnson had been abusive to his wife, Evelyn Lozada, “from the beginning of their relationship.”

The marriage was reportedly “volatile” in nature, and that he once went “off the scale” (whatever that means) because he didn’t want her friends and assistant living in their house. According to the report, “friends were genuinely concerned for her safety.”

The report also claims, citing the unnamed source, that Johnson once threatened to kill Lozada.

If any of this is true, then there should be more witnesses — and they should be willing to go on the record. Even if they aren’t, they could eventually be testifying in court, if the criminal assault charges against Johnson aren’t otherwise resolved.

Regardless of whether others will talk and/or testify about abuse they witnessed, Lozada should be able to add more allegations, either in court or publicly, to go along with her contention that he head-butted her on Saturday night. Unless and until she or others do, it’s hard to give this new report much credence.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Quote

TMZ.com reports that Broward County, FL has issued a warrant for free agent Chad Johnson's arrest.
The warrant stems from his domestic violence conviction involving ex-wife Evelyn Lozada last summer. Johnson has reportedly failed to report to his probation officer, violating the terms of his probation. If a judge determines that he indeed violated the terms of his probation, Johnson could face jail time. May 16 - 3:35 PM
