Vin+ 3,121 Posted February 9, 2013 (edited) Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell recently told the Florida Times Union that he plans to "build around" Blaine Gabbert as Jacksonville's 2013 starter. Caldwell noted that Gabbert, 23, is "the second-youngest quarterback in the NFL," and he anticipates a third-year leap. (Caldwell is more optimistic than we are.) "What were they saying about other quarterbacks after their second year?" Caldwell asked rhetorically. "We’re looking for improvement (in year three). We need to build around him. We’ll upgrade whenever we can upgrade." Added new coach Gus Bradley, "(Gabbert) has been very impressive so far in our conversations." CampinWithaMissingPerson 2,025 Posted February 9, 2013 The situation is pretty much — no other options worth committing to (rookie QBs don't match Jags position in the draft), FA QBs aren't worth signing, trading for another team's backup isn't attractive value wise. So you might as well see what the kid does in year three. Because, let's be honest, the Jags are lacking in a lot of areas. They aren't going to do much next year. You build up talent, and either Gabbert fails again, and you get a good draft slot with a good QB class coming. Or he actually develops, and you have a QB. All the while you don't reach on a QB this year, and instead stock up on the very deep class of DL, DBs, and OL.
Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted February 9, 2013 He should have just stayed in school... Good news is... you still have Chad Henne on the bench, and making more than Gabbert.
oochymp 2,393 Posted February 9, 2013 Sampson sums it up pretty well, but I loved the "(Caldwell is more optimistic than we are)" in the summary article
baltimoreravens 19 Posted February 9, 2013 I'm not a Tebow fan at all, but the Jags should get him. He wouldn't be worse than Gabbert and he would likely rejuvenate a stoic fan base. If not Tebow, go for someone like Flynn or Vick. I'd add in Kirk Cousins but Skins would be smart to hold onto him since RG3 is injury prone. There are QBs out there. CampinWithaMissingPerson 2,025 Posted February 9, 2013 I'm not a Tebow fan at all, but the Jags should get him. No offense, but I think that line of thinking is completely ridiculous. First off, Tebow is not an upgrade, ever. The guy is not an NFL QB. People call him a "winner", yet he's got only got two more wins than losses (9-7.) Vince Young has a better record than that, AND better passing and rushing statistics. Should the Jags go sign Vince Young? Come on now. The only reason Tebow got some wins on the Broncos, is because it's a team with decent all around talent, the Jags don't have that. Tebow would fail on the field in Jacksonville, period. Second off, the fan base just bought the most tickets in SEVEN YEARS last year. All the while the team had it's worst record ever. They were 17th in filling up their stadium. That's league average. The Jags are not struggling in ticket sales, or fan base wise. Turn that to teams like Miami, Tampa, Oakland, St. Louis, San Diego, etc. Who all 5 finished bottom of the league in both filling up their stadium and average attendance period. Oakland is taking seats away, so much so that they are now the smallest capacity stadium in the league. Meanwhile Jacksonville is ADDING seats. How is that a stoic fan base? Again, national perception of Jacksonville is leading people astray of what's really going on there. Third off, trading for Flynn or Cousins is stupid. Neither is proven, both have only THREE STARTS COMBINED. We have no idea how either would be as "the guy." Especially on a talent deprived team like Jacksonville. But that's not even the main point. The biggest knock against trading for those guys is precisely that, you'd have to trade for them. Look at Matt Cassel, Kevin Kolb, A.J. Feeley, Jeff Lewis, Rob Johnson, there's too many to name. All backup QBs who looked awesome in spot duty who got traded for valuable picks and failed miserably with the team who traded picks away for them. In fact, the only two ones I can think of that worked out have been Mark Brunell and Matt Schaub. That's it. That's two out of many. You can add Alex Smith to this same argument. Though he's had more starts, but he's not "the guy." Both with QBs like RGIII, Russ Wilson and Colin K, those teams know they're just big hits away from being out. So they're not gonna let their backup QBs go without a high price (as you already said about RGIII and the Skins.) It's just a stupid move, there's no value in it. It's a sucker move. In terms of Vick, the guy is old, injury prone, and having him on a worse team (than Philly) like Jacksonville is just stupid and asking for disaster. So yeah, there are QBs out there, but none make sense in the long term. That's why just rolling with Gabbert and Henne makes more sense than trading away picks or giving a contract to guys like Vick. You either sink or swim with Gabbert, and worst case scenario you have another bad year and get that valuable high pick when lots of great college QB prospects will be available, unlike this year. That is the best course of action, and precisely what I think David Caldwell is thinking by giving out this lip service.
ATL_Predator+ 1,196 Posted February 9, 2013 Tebow is shit, and a detriment to ANY team he goes to. A media whore #1, #2 A dogshit QB, worse than any starter in the NFL currently. If ANYONE honestly thinks that him going to back to his 'hometown' in Florida will do him any good...just ask his fans how they fucking feel about him when the Jags go 0-16 with him running the helm. The man's a joke, and a disgrace to many backups who deserve shots at starting but get thrown under by the 4th string QB Tebow train running to town whenever a trade rumor of a QB for a shitty team arises. He's not a QB, just a curse.
Thanatos 2,847 Posted February 9, 2013 Wow. I am very very impressed by the Jaguars doing this. This is exactly what I thought they should do, but I figured there was no way they would do it. Do NOT reach for a QB, build your team up. Maybe Gabbert gets better, (maybe pigs fly, too). If not, you build your team, and get ready for next year's draft when you can get a QB.

Vin+ 3,121 Posted February 14, 2013 New Jaguars QB coach Frank Scelfo says that Blaine Gabbert would grade out as the No. 1 quarterback in this year's draft class. In other words, Scelfo claims Gabbert is better than West Virginia's Geno Smith, North Carolina State's Mike Glennon and Arkansas' Tyler Wilson. "Ask the scouting departments and the general managers around the league and I think you would end up with a yes on that," Scelfo said. "Basically at his age, 23, the number-one pick in the draft with two years of experience already under his belt. That's pretty good." It's further proof that the new Jags regime remains high on Gabbert and committed to developing him as their starting quarterback. A realist would point to the former No. 10 overall pick's meager 53.8 career completion percentage and brutal 5.6 yards per attempt through two NFL seasons. Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted February 14, 2013 A QB with 2 years of experience is better than a fresh batch of rookies who haven't even gone through the combine yet? Great news. lmao.
NY Diehard 26 Posted February 14, 2013 I'd take Geno over Gabbert right now.
