Update: Josh Gordon's suspension to go from 16 to 10 games

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Sources tell ESPN that Josh Gordon could face a season-long suspension following a second failed drug test, this time for marijuana.
The Browns can't even bask in their Johnny Manziel glory for 24 hours. Gordon, who was booted off Baylor's football team for failed drug tests, was suspended by the NFL for the first two games of last season after violating the league's substance abuse policy. A second violation can come with a 16-game ban, although the Browns are hoping to get that reduced to 4-6 games on appeal. Regardless, it would be a devastating blow to an offense that was previously trending up. Gordon was fantasy's No. 1 receiver last season, racking up a league-high 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns in 14 games. Cleveland only has Andrew Hawkins, Nate Burleson and Greg Little behind him. Josh Gordon is arguably the best WR in the league... At worst, 2nd best. It actually pisses me off that he is this stupid.

I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt as this hasn't been confirmed, but he is bonehead and still hasn't learned from his college days. Its a shame someone with so much god given talent would just piss away for a high.

I'm looking forward to the season either way. Manziel even if he sucks brought life back to the fanbase, he gives us someone to be excited about whether that be long term or short term.

New policy will change pot discipline
Updated: May 13, 2014, 3:58 PM ET
By Dan Graziano | ESPN.com

It would be too late to help Josh Gordon, Will Hill or anyone else in danger of lengthy suspensions for violations of current rules. But when and if the NFL's new drug policy is finalized and announced, it will include changes specific to marijuana and other drugs of abuse.

A source told ESPN.com on Tuesday that the renegotiation of the drug policy, which has been going on since 2011 and includes testing for HGH, also will significantly increase the threshold for a positive marijuana test and reduce the punishments for violations involving that drug.

The source said the NFL's policy on marijuana is outdated, pointing out that WADA has a higher threshold for a positive test than the NFL currently does, and in need of updating.

The NFLPA has expressed to the league an interest in studying the medical research that has led to the legalization of marijuana in many states for medicinal use, but it believes changes were needed in the meantime regardless.

What's holding up the implementation and announcement of changes to the league's drug policy is a continued standoff over arbitration of discipline. In cases of non-analytical positives (i.e., an Alex Rodriguez type of case in which a player is found in violation of the drug policy by some method other than a failed test) or in cases of violations of law (i.e., hypothetically, a player got caught trying to smuggle prescription drugs across the Canadian border), the NFLPA has asked that discipline appeals be heard by an independent arbitrator.

The NFL has continued to insist that the commissioner have final say over discipline matters.

It's the same hangup that was addressed last week by union president Eric Winston, who said of commissioner Roger Goodell on the issue of HGH testing, "He wants to hold all the cards and he wants to be the judge, jury and executioner, and we're not going to go for an un-American system like that."

In response to the union's claims, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello e-mailed the following last week to ESPN: "It's kind of funny because since 2011 the union has come up with one excuse after another to avoid implementing an agreement to test for HGH. First, it was the testing method; then it was the population study; now it's commissioner authority. Our commitment to testing is clear. The same cannot be said of the union."

The dispute over arbitration, it turns out, is holding up more than just HGH testing. There are widespread changes to the NFL's drug policy that these two sides have negotiated and are waiting to implement once they can reach agreement on the administration of discipline.

Which is way too long for a weed issue.

Make it a game, every time, regardless of how important that game is. Let Josh Gordon miss a playoff game, eventually, something of that magnitude. These guys won't just smoke before they play the Jacksonvilles of the league. They're too addicted.

You mean when he gets traded by the Browns? Otherwise he'd retire first.

Meanwhile... Ray Rice is beating women (don't remember if it was confirmed to be his wife/girl) and dragging their limp bodies out of elevators and there's no suspension.

Makes perfect sense. :coffee:

The Cleveland Plain Dealer says Josh Gordon was in Stage 3 of the league's substance abuse program at the time of his latest alleged positive test.

It's a crucial distinction because a violation in Stage 3 carries a minimum suspension of one year. Afterward, players must apply for reinstatement to the NFL. Meanwhile, both Gordon and the league have maintained complete silence since the story broke in early May. Gordon's camp is appealing on unknown grounds. Even if the league's archaic marijuana punishments are on the verge of being modernized, we doubt Roger Goodell is going to show leniency to a Stage 3 offender.

Josh Katzowitz, CBS

With Browns receiver Josh Gordon on the precipice of a league-mandated suspension that could cost him the entire 2014 season after failing another drug test, the Cleveland standout who led the league in receiving yards last year despite a two-game suspension can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Gordon was issued a speeding ticket on Memorial Day, according to WKCY, after police say he was caught driving 74 mph in a 60 mph zone. During the stop, a passenger in Gordon's Mercedes was issued a citation for possession of marijuana.

Police say the marijuana was found in a blue bag, and the passenger admitted that it belonged to that person.

"We are gathering information regarding the situation," the team said in a statement released to multiple media outlets. "We will not have any further comment until the appropriate time."

It was reported earlier this week that Gordon is in Stage 3 of the league's drug program. That means a violation of the NFL's policy would keep him from playing for at least a year. Gordon has appealed the suspension for now.

"We have to build this team so that no one player drives the ship," coach Mike Pettine said earlier this month. "That we can be insulated losing players for extended periods of time potentially is part of the game. Successful franchises are the ones that have enough depth built and enough options to account for it."

Gordon is due to be in court June 4 to answer the speeding citation.

My Lord. Like, what in the... I mean how do you... How in the... YES, they ARE trying to catch you ridin' dirty. SO QUIT FUCKING UP! lol, this dude. Maverick, you and Jim Carrey said it all.

Josh Gordon appeal hearing scheduled for late July

Josh Gordon's name didn't come up in the trio of suspensions announced Thursday on the eve of a holiday weekend for the NFL. It's possible we won't know the fate of the Cleveland Browns wide receiver for several more weeks.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that Gordon's suspension appeal hearing will be held at the end of July, according to a source familiar with the timing of the player's appeal.ProFootballTalk had the first report.

Browns training camp starts on July 26, meaning Gordon could potentially participate in team workouts while waiting for his appeal to be heard.

Gordon faces a potentially lengthy suspension for a positive drug test. The appeal hearing could be nixed if the NFL and NFL Players Association strike a deal on a reduced suspension for Gordon, who was the NFL's leading receiver in 2013.

Gordon was suspended two games and fined four game checks by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy last year. He also failed at least one marijuana test at Baylor, leading to an indefinite ban.

I know he's stupid for smoking, but I really hope he doesn't get punished for long. Hopefully 2 games at the most especially considering it's not a performing enhancing drug. I really want to see Josh Gordon play and see him in this Browns offense. The Browns finally have some good things going on for their franchise and I'd like to see it play out.

Per Rotoworld.com:

WKYC reports Josh Gordon was arrested for DWI early Saturday morning in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Gordon was charged for driving while impaired at around 4:00 a.m. The arrest is his second run-in with the law in the past two months after his vehicle received a citation for possession of marijuana in May. It further complicates Gordon's appeal of his year-long suspension and puts his career in jeopardy. Gordon has an NFL hearing scheduled for his failed drug test in late July. Jul 5 - 3:07 PM
