Update: Packers extend Jordy Nelson for 4 years, $39M

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN's Rob Demovsky reports the Packers would like to sign contract-year WR Jordy Nelson to an extension "sooner rather than later."
Demovsky adds that the Packers want to extend Nelson before opening up talks with Randall Cobb. Nelson, 29, is due $2.55 million in the final year of his contract. He's been one of the top receivers in the league playing with Aaron Rodgers the last three seasons and could command $10 million annually. Green Bay's $13.64 million in cap space could allow the sides to reach a deal prior to training camp. Jul 5 - 7:27 PM

I have a feeling Nelson will be putting up 3-5 more 1,000 yard seasons

A top WR in the league? Yes. Better than Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, and Julio Jones? No.

Tbh he is one of the top WR's in the league and one of the most consistent. He is our #1 and the relationship he has with Rodgers is invaluable too. Glad to hear this is getting done.

On the cusp. but not top ten.

He will prove it to you this year. Although Aaron is still Aaron.. He's one of the best at spreading the ball around, so I doubt Jordy ever has one of those ridiculous 10,000 yard type seasons. :yep:

Like Brandon Marshall?

Brandon Marshall doesn't have any mind blowingly great years... Not saying they are bad... And they should be better. With the targets and attention he gets from his QB, anyway.

Brandon Marshall doesn't have any mind blowingly great years

Seven straight years of over 1000 yards. Five of them of 100+ receptions.

Three of them 10+ TDs. But he's never had any "mindblowing" great years. Such a mindless hate.

What? Seven straight years over 1000 yards is most definitely impressive, but the fact that you have to generalize them all like that without pointing out one year in particular proves my point. You are doing my job for me, thank you.

If you're generalizing a person's career, that means that they have been consistently playing at a high level. There wasn't a year in that stretch that he was under 1000 yards and only two seasons when he was under 100 catches when he had nobodies throwing to him in Miami. I definitely think being able to generalize a persons career is better (especially considering his numbers) and proves consistency rather than being able to pick a season here and there which shows fluctuating production. I think you are debunking your point rather than strengthening it.

This wasn't even a discussion about Brandon Marshall... Consistency is good, consistently underperforming (even if that is still at a high level) isn't.

Look at Randy Moss... The difference is being the GOAT and being one of the best.

The original thing that brought this up was me saying Jordy wasn't going to have that one EPIC mind shatteringly good season. That is what started the topic, me pointing out the lack of ONE truly great season (in regards to Nelson, not Marshall)... And now you and Chernobyl want to make it into me crusading against Brandon Marshall.

If you need to change the context of the discussion to appear as if you've won it, you've already lost.

Stats from the past 3 seasons (Just food for thought on this one fellas)

2012: 49 REC | 795 Yards | 7 TD (On 73 Targets) - Only 12 Games Played

2013: 85 REC | 1314 Yards | 8 TD (On 126 Targets)

The (somewhat legitimate) skepticism that is relatively common here surrounding Nelson with the "what-ifs" carry no real weight IRL. The possibility that he may or may not put up the kind of numbers somewhere else that he does in GB with Rodgers throwing him the ball doesn't really mean anything, since Rodgers WILL be throwing him the ball, probably as long as he's in GB or close to it. Just because he might not be worth 10 mill to your team or my team doesn't mean he's not worth it to the Packers. As long as Rodgers still trusts him and wants to throw TD's and yards galore to Nelson, he should be compensated accordingly.

I don't know if he gets the whole ten, especially after the last two WR's that broke the bank also broke their fans hearts immediately after. With legit no.1's Bowe and Wallace getting P-A-I-D and then pulling a :ninja: disappearing act, it might be hard for a guy who's splitting targets with whoever Rodgers feels like throwing to that day to cash in THAT big. He'll command a hefty pay raise though.

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky reports walk-year WR Jordy Nelson is seeking "at least" $10 million per season in long-term talks.
Nelson has no intention of handing out another discount. Nelson has been one of the league's most underpaid players since signing his four-year, $13.989 million deal in the fall of 2011. The $10 million demand shouldn't surprise the Packers, who have roughly $13 million in cap space. A deal could be worked out before Week 1. Jul 24 - 2:17 PM

how much of an impact does Roddy White's 4 year $30M extension have on these negotiations?

He's far superior to White, so he should probably get 10. I don't like paying a WR that much, even one as amazing as Jordy. I trust Aaron to throw the ball to anyone and put up big numbers.

It is what it is though, Ted Thompson knows what's going on... I think.

honestly, the deal could work in Nelson's favor, Roddy is older (by almost four years) and it looks like his deal is front loaded, ESPN says $18M in the first two years, focusing on that number could definitely help Nelson get up to or over $10M, bottom line there's no way Roddy's deal doesn't come up

It's hard to compare Roddy's contract with other players.

Roddy is the greatest WR in Falcons history, and the franchise wants him to retire and for him to be a Falcon every snap of his career.

Roddy has come a long way, and has stuck with us through Vick, Bobby Petrino, and now Matt Ryan. Roddy has been nothing but a class act and has been the oil to the Falcons machine for many years now. He's never given up on us...even though he's had every reason in the world to possibly walk away.

It's a token of gratitude moreso it is for his WR ability. He's still a top WR, and in no way shape or form is he worse than Jordy Nelson...note that the man who thinks Jordy Nelson is better has also been on record saying Greg Jennings is better than Roddy...and also please note the mindless Brandon Marshall logic.

I'd take Jordy over Roddy no problem. I think Jordy's better at the moment, and on the cusp of being better than White ever was even at his best.

He was a 98/1620 receiver with Rodgers last year, and a 70/1008 receiver with the combination of Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien. So elite production with an elite QB, and very good production with garbage. Clearly he's not just a function of Arodg.

And he passes my eye test with flying colors. Fantastic routes, works the sideline as well as anyone in the league, top 5 hands, top 5 catch radius, excellent in jump ball situations, red zone threat…

Definitely a top 10 receiver in my book. I'd pay him 10M/season no problem to get him on my team.

I normally have reservations about over paying anyone especially WR's, however the production and chemistry that Jordy has with Rodgers is valuable to the team.

He is still one of the most underrated players in the league and his production is that of a 1# WR. The only problem is the cap space we have right now.
