Update: Chiefs, Justin Houston have made progress

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio reports a "huge" gap exists between OLB Justin Houston's demands and the Chiefs' current offer.
The Chiefs offered Houston a new contract after he reported for training camp, but Houston reportedly "didn't like it." Houston is understandably unhappy with the $1.431 million base salary he is scheduled to make in the final year of his rookie deal, and is likely looking for something similar to the five-year, $57 million deal teammate Tamba Hali received in 2011. It'll be ok. I've been reading that they're waiting to see how some of the camp battles shake out before they know exactly how much cash they have leftover to spend. If the younger guys win out, that could free up some substantial bank for free agents and contract extensions. As of now, it's a non-story IMO.

I'd give up Marcus Smith and multiple picks for Houston.

That's a trade that would only happen in Madden.

Per Rotoworld.com:

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports there is "not a chance" the Chiefs agree to a long-term deal with OLB Justin Houston before this season is over.
La Canfora reports the sides are "far apart," echoing a similar story from PFT published earlier this month. Houston is clearly seeking top-pass-rusher dollar, which is understandable after a dominant 2013 season. Still only 25 years old, Houston would surely break the bank on the 2015 free agent market. 11 sacks last year and he only played in 11 games. Sounds great right? Well, without trying to knock Houston because I'm actually one of his biggest supporters, if you look more in depth you get a real story.

He recorded 3 of those 11 sacks in week 1 against the Jaguars. Then in week 3 he recorded 4.5 more sacks (Along with a FF and several pass deflections). So you're talking 7.5 of his sacks coming in 2 games alone.

Sacks tend to come in bunches, but his pressure was consistent. He had 15 QB hits too.

Titans could use a solid pass rusher from the OLB position. Hope he does fail to get a contract there and can come play here :yep:

For another example, Robert Quinn had 19 sacks and was clearly dominant on film last season. But if you look at his game log, 9 of those sacks came against the Seahawks, Cardinals, and Bucs-- three teams with bad offensive lines. I could try and use that to diminish what he did, but I don't think it's smart to do so. Just watching him play last year, it was clear that he's as good as advertised no matter how you want to slice the numbers.

I'm not trying to diminish what he did, trying to point out that if he has stayed healthy all year he would have had a monstrous season. He was battling injury for the better part of the season and then ended up missing five games. If he wants a contact, stay healthy and I'm positive he gets it.

I'm one of the few that believes Houston is better than Aldon Smith.

Per Rotoworld.com:

FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo reports the Chiefs have "never been close" to a long-term deal with free agent OLB Justin Houston, and are expected to apply the franchise tag.
The tag has been expected for the 2011 third-rounder, who led the league with 22 sacks in 2014. Per Garafolo, Houston may wait a while before signing. Previous reports had suggested Houston would "immediately" sign the one-year tender, but he apparently wants to make the Chiefs sweat as the sides negotiate a long-term pact. Houston turned 26 last month. Feb 17 - 3:03 PM

Per Rotoworld.com:

Chiefs franchise tagged OLB Justin Houston will not sign his tender immediately.
Clearly unhappy with the tag, a league source tells PFT that Houston is already considering waiting until Week 10 to sign his tender. By protesting the lack of a long-term deal via that path, he minimizes his risk of getting hurt while still accruing a year toward free agency. At the very least, we'd expect Houston to skip OTAs and minicamps. Meanwhile, Houston is also consulting with the NFLPA to decide whether he should file a grievance on his positional status. The Chiefs tagged him as a linebacker, worth roughly $13.17M. Defensive end franchise tags are worth roughly $14.78M. Mar 2 - 10:45 AM

They can't have this dude sitting. Gotta get him on the field. It's a different defense without him out there. Dude is a beast, and he gets better every season. Gotta love a dude like that. Pay this man.

Once the new league year begins on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET, players restricted by the franchise tag can start entertaining offers from teams that would be willing: (1) to pay them a lot of money; and (2) to give up two first-round draft picks to make it happen.

It’s highly unusual for franchise players to be signed to offer sheets, because teams regard any unused first-round picks as potential Hall of Fame players. Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston could become the exception, for various reasons.

First, he enters the process after completing a 22-sack season. No player with that kind of performance has been available on the heels of it, with or without compensation.

Second, he’s motivated to move on. Per multiple sources, Houston is very upset with the Chiefs. It’s believed that he’ll actively solicit an offer sheet in the hopes the Chiefs won’t match it.

If an offer sheet doesn’t happen before the 2015 draft, something could happen after the draft, because at that point a team signing him would give up first-round picks in 2016 and 2017. For a coach or G.M. who may be fired at the end of the season, giving up draft picks they may not be there to use is a small price to pay.

As previously explained, Houston is considering staying away from the Chiefs until Week 10 of the regular season, the deadline for showing up and completing enough of the season to become a free agent next year.

that's an interesting suggestion, funny that it didn't mention the far more likely sign-and-trade option, and Houston's value to KC goes down if they believe he'll sit out so he could be available for much less than two first round picks

Per Rotoworld.com:

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Chiefs have made "significant progress" in long-term talks with unsigned franchise player Justin Houston.
It directly contradicts Profootballtalk's Monday report that the sides have made "no real progress in months." The Kansas City Star later confirmed Mike Florio's report. Houston's odds of getting a long-term pact by Wednesday's deadline appear to be no better than 50-50. Jul 13 - 3:24 PM

Per PFT

For all the talk, we have our first deal of the day.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chiefs havebeaten the deadline with a deal for linebacker Justin Houston, a reported six-year, $101 million deal with $52.5 million guaranteed, details which PFT has confirmed as well.

This is where we put in our standard proviso that the details will show what is actual money and actually guaranteed, but if as billed, it would be the biggest linebacker deal in NFL history, trailing only Ndamukong Suh’s haul this offseason.

Keeping Houston was a priority for the Chiefs, allowing them a formidable pass rush for years to come.

And an expensive one.

I think they overpaid for him, but at the same time how could they just let him walk? What kind of trade value can you get from a guy who isn't under contract? The Chiefs were stuck between a rock and a hard place but hey, on the bright side (kind of) at least they don't have to pay their QB anything close to elite money lol.
