seanbrock 1,684 Posted August 28, 2014 Sean was obviously being sarcastic. Cherry jumped the gun a bit, but his defensiveness is warranted. In reality, the biggest difference between early Manning and early Dalton is that hype factor that everyone seems to despise these days. Peyton went to Tennessee, and Dalton went to TCU. Manning was no.1 overall, and Dalton didn't get taken until the 3rd round. Expectations and concessions were made for Peyton. No.1 overall QBs always get the benefit of the doubt until they prove to boom or bust, and we all know what Manning did. Still, he did nothing—I repeat , NOTHING—in his first three seasons that would have made anyone think he was the next coming of Dan Marino aside from being hyped and throwing an unprecedented amount of passes for a rookie. Manning took over the offense immediately, but he wasn't instant epic like people think. Take it from someone who was big into football when Manning was a rookie: the same warning signs were there. The biggest difference, as far as I can see, is the confidence lever. Manning was just super confident/cocky, whereas Dalton worries a bit too much. Who knows if this will be a long term impedance for Andy, and I'm not in any way saying that I expect Peyton-like results from Andy. Still though, most of the people that are all fired up have always had the same problems with Peyton that we're all having with Andy now... Remember how many QB's threw for 4000 yards when Peyton Manning was a young QB? Not many, not many at all. He was also throwing 25+ TD's. Now, the efficiency wasn't always there, but saying Peyton didn't do anything to make people think he was going to have a great career as a young QB is monumentally stupid and unequivocally false. I took a look at Andy Dalton's game logs and not only has he NEVER played well against a good or contending team, but each and every single good game that Andy Dalton has had, AJ Green has had at the very least a good game, if not a dominant game. Peyton has always played with talent, but he's never relied on one guy the way Dalton relies on Green. Comparing Peyton Manning to Andy Dalton is nothing short of laughable and I HATE Peyton Manning and have for pretty much his entire career. I have no real problem with Dalton, other than the fact that he's just not very good. As a matter of fact, I like the Bengals.

Zack_of_Steel+ 3,014 Posted August 28, 2014 Manning has been catered to his entire career on the offensive side of the ball. His defense wasn't there until the 2006 playoffs. Dalton is also catered to on offense, but his defense is the reason his team has even sniffed the playoffs recently. Peyton was the reason his team was in the playoffs consistently during the early part of his career. Andy Dalton has been along for the ride, failing to take advantage of what could be an awesome team. Andy is a prime example of volume stats not telling the entire story. A simple glance at his YPA will tell you all you need to know.
seanbrock 1,684 Posted August 28, 2014 Yeah and Manning had picks early in his career but that's because like Zack said, his team relied on him to win games. Dalton is pretty much a game manager. His 1st 2nd and 3rd read on any given play is AJ Green lol. Sad part is, the Bengals have actually done a great job putting talent around the guy but he just still continues to be mediocre.
