Report: Montee Ball will be out 'for a while'

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

A source tells the Denver Post that the initial belief is that Montee Ball (groin) will be out "for a while."
Ball is headed for an MRI Monday on what looks like a pretty severe groin pull. He was struggling badly so far this season anyway, rushing 55 times for 172 yards (3.12 YPC) with one touchdown. On Sunday, the backfield was turned over to Ronnie Hillman (15 carries) with Juwan Thompson (three carries) in support. C.J. Anderson was a healthy scratch, but probably only because he doesn't play on special teams. Going forward, we'd expect a committee featuring Hillman as the likely starter and Anderson mixing in as well. Oct 5 - 9:01 PM

Montee has been nothing short of a disappointment, but a lot of the blame needs to go to the run blocking of the Broncos' offensive line. Particularly on Sunday, there were a few plays where there were defenders in the backfield before Montee even got the ball. It makes no sense to me, as the line should be better than it was last year, when we were pretty efficient at opening holes for Moreno.

Hillman will get the first looks, but with his fumble history I have a hard time believing in him. I'd like to see Juwan Thompson get 15 carries or so against the Jets. He's huge and explosive at the line, and was a beast in his preseason action. I don't really expect anyone to have big games as long as the o-line continues to get pushed around running the ball.

The Denver Post reports Montee Ball's groin injury may only cost him two weeks.

ESPN's Jeff Legwold is reporting Ball's injury could cost him "as many as three weeks," though it sounds like he won't miss much more than that. A Monday MRI revealed Ball's injury will not require surgery. It's good news for Ball owners, as he's not done for the season and will miss brutal forthcoming run-defense matchups with the Jets and 49ers. The Broncos have a far more favorable stretch-run schedule, although it's fair to wonder if Ball might begin losing snaps to Ronnie Hillman, C.J. Anderson, and/or Juwan Thompson if they excel in his absence. Fantasy owners should try to keep Ball stashed as an injured RB4.

What great news for the Broncos!

@MHG: Who have been the offenders in the run blocking department. Kind of surprises me too.

Per Rotoworld.com:

The Denver Post's Mike Klis said Montee Ball's groin injury "will make it difficult for him to regain his featured-back role this year."
Ball did not play well to start the season, but was still the unquestioned lead back through the Broncos' first three games. If Ronnie Hillman continues to run well the next several weeks, Ball will likely return to more of a committee approach. That would severely limit Ball's value, making him nothing more than a touchdown-or-bust fantasy option. He is still a hold in most formats, but he is looking more and more like a fantasy bust. Ball is likely out until at least Week 9. Oct 18 - 11:13 AM
