Update: Victor Cruz to have season-ending calf surgery

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Victor Cruz's knee injury is considered more serious than an ACL tear.
Cruz ruptured his right patellar tendon against the Eagles Sunday night. It's a rare injury, one that the Daily News says "could rob him of what makes him truly dangerous: his explosive change-of-direction ability." Cruz is tentatively expected back for 2015 training camp, but effectiveness is going to be a major question mark for the slot man that desperately needs his quicks. Oct 14 - 8:55 AM

Wow, that's crazy. I can't believe that injury was so serious. Makes you wonder if Cruz had some kind of sprain or something going into the game. It didn't look bad in live action or the replays, but you could tell by his reaction how serious it was.

Hate seeing this, even against a divisional rival. Cruz is a pretty likable player. It's a grim reminder of the dangers of football, but still tough to see.

In his absence, will the Giants be showing a heavier dosage of OBJ?

It seems that way. Sucks for Cruz. I always root for the UDFA guys. Seeing him crying on the cart was tough to watch...

Hopefully this isn't the end, for him. Victor Cruz is the kind of player whose rare skills allow him to make up for what he lacks in stature. One of my favorite players. I was one of (I think) 3 people who made a horribly insensitive joke in the shoutbox when his injury occurred, and I've never felt worse in my life. I hope his career isn't horribly altered by this injury.

Get well soon, Victor. Come back and continue to shock the world.

Me too man, seeing them become successful in the league is always great.

As for Victor, wish him all the best on his long and tough road to recovery. I know the kind of intense rehab it takes to come back from ACL reconstruction over 10 years ago back before the advances in that type of surgery, but his rehab will be that much more difficult and lengthy. Look forward when he's able to return to the field for Big Blue.

One thing working in his favor is technology. Peters ruptured his achilles twice, same one and he's like 350 and is back and still athletic as ever. Thomas Davis has had multiple surgeries and is still very good. I'm sure Cruz will be back.

It's not that he won't have a chance to play again, it's that in order to protect himself he may need to adjust his game to a great degree. This tendon attaches the kneecap to muscle. Complicated re-attachment. This is worse than an ACL tear.

From a doctor: "Long recovery for Cruz. More difficult recovery than Achilles repair historically. Not many have returned to be the same player afterwards."

:(

Hopefully he defies the odds. :yep:

Cruz is gonna work his ass off and do whatever it takes to get back on the field. Even though he probably won't be the same player, I believe he'll return when he's ready.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Coach Tom Coughlin said the Giants expect Victor Cruz (patellar tear) to avoid active/PUP to start training camp.
In other words, the Giants think Cruz will be ready to participate from Day 1 of camp. It also means they couldn't stash him on reserve/PUP to start the year -- a move that would rule him out of the first six weeks. Cruz claims he'll be "somewhere around 100 percent" by late July or early August. The fact that the Giants have joined him in his optimism bodes well. Jun 18 - 12:31 PM

Although I would expect him to start off slow, having Cruz back along side Randell and Beckham will be a huge boost. With how Preston Parker is doing so far in camp as well could be a very nice 4 some for Eli to throw too.

Would love to see Cruz have a big year.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Victor Cruz (knee) has avoided the PUP list to begin training camp, but will be "eased in."
Cruz has made surprisingly-fast progress since tearing his patellar tendon last Week 6, and is tentatively expected to play in the preseason. He should be ready to go for Week 1. With Odell Beckham established as one of the best wideouts in the NFL, Cruz is no longer a WR1/2, but checks in as an upside WR3. Jul 30 - 5:04 PM

Still early and it's just team drills, but it's at least a little encouraging:

Dan Graziano, ESPN Staff Writer
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- It was during 11-on-11 team drills in Saturday's New York Giants practice that Victor Cruz made himself smile. He caught a short pass from Eli Manning and made one of his signature "jump-cut" moves to the side to fake out the defender and pick up a couple more yards. It might not have stood out to him last year in training camp, but as Cruz works his way back from a serious knee injury, small moments like that feel big.
"I was kind of happy about it, because it was almost subconscious," the Giants' star wideout said after practice. "You grab the ball and you see a defender and you want to make him miss, and it kind of just happened. I got him to move a little bit, and I took it up the sideline for a few yards. Nothing hurt, and I was able to make it happen, so I was excited."
Cruz tore the patellar tendon in his right knee in Week 6 against the Eagles last year and missed the remainder of the season. Since training camp started, he's had his practice reps limited, but he's been able to participate more than he or the Giants expected him to. He will travel with the team to Cincinnati on Monday so that he can continue to work in individual drills in practice, though the team will keep him out of any practice activity against the Bengals and he won't play in Friday's preseason opener.
"They don't want me to get over-competitive, go out there and do something crazy," Cruz said. "As much as I assured them I won't, they still won't allow me. It's a little difficult, but you have to understand that there's a bigger picture."
Cruz maintains that his goal is play in the season opener Sept. 13 against the Cowboys in Dallas. He believes he's on track to get there, though he doesn't know if he'll be allowed to play in any of the preseason games.
"I think that's up to the training staff as they see me progress," Cruz said. "I would love some kind of tune-up work to kind of go out there and feel what the game speed feels like again, get hit at real speed again so it won't be so much of a surprise come Week 1. But I leave it up to the coaching staff and the training staff."
As far as how he feels at practice, Cruz said there are no physical restrictions on him other than the limited number of reps. He said there are "still certain routes that I'm getting comfortable with," and that there are times when he wonders in the moment whether "that pop is still there, that quickness out of the break." But he believes his confidence will improve with time and reps, and when he watched himself on film he likes what he sees.
"I see a guy that resembles the guy that was playing last year," Cruz said. "Still got that same pop, that same ability, that same lateral quickness of the line. So it's just a matter of building off of that. There's still a lot to work on, but I'm happy that the quickness is pretty much still there and I can still get upfield pretty quickly."
He is not wearing a brace or sleeve on the knee and doesn't plan to. He says that if the point of sitting out 10 months was to come back stronger, he wanted to make sure he came back strong enough that he didn't need that kind of assistance. At this point, all he needs is to keep getting better and improving the way he has so far. And while he's clearly not out of the woods and neither he nor the team can be 100 percent certain that he'll return to full strength, all signs are encouraging.
"I just haven't let it all out of the bag yet," Cruz said. "I'm just trying different things, making sure my releases and stuff are still top-notch and I'm able to get around the DBs at the line and get moving. The more I do it, the more that confidence builds."

The Giants have removed the practice restrictions on Victor Cruz (patellar tendon), who on Monday declared himself "100 percent."

He'll be a full participant in Monday evening's Giants practice and may play in the second preseason game later this week. "I feel good. The knee is 100 percent," Cruz said during in a WFAN interview. "[sunday] was probably my most physically enduring practice, in terms of limitations. You know they have been keeping me down to a number of plays per day. {Sunday] was my most." Cruz is ten months removed from surgery to repair a ruptured patellar tendon. While we remain skeptical of his re-draft value, Cruz should help the Giants as a possession-slot receiver if he can stay healthy this year.

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN Giants reporter Dan Graziano "believes" there's a "good chance" Victor Cruz (calf) doesn't play before Week 4.
Cruz has been battling a calf issue that could be related to his surgically-repaired knee for about three weeks now and is idle at Giants practice Wednesday. It doesn't sound like he's close to returning to the field after coach Tom Coughlin was unable to provide an update earlier this morning. Cruz is becoming increasingly-harder to roster in regular-sized 12-team leagues. Rueben Randle and Preston Parker will take on bigger offensive roles while Cruz is out. Sep 9 - 12:50 PM
