Update: RG3 officially benched

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Based on conversations with the Redskins' old coaching staff, ESPN's Steve Young stated that he knows Robert Griffin III "doesn't put the time in."
"I’ve talked to his previous coaches, people I really trust and admire, that know quarterbacks," Young said. "He doesn’t put the time in." Current Redskins coach Jay Gruden all but confirmed Young's comments by recently stating Griffin has "fundamental flaws" and his footwork is "not even close" to where it needs to be. On Wednesday, Gruden continued to dance around the topic and paint a rose-colored picture. "He could do more probably," Gruden acknowledged, "[but] he studies himself and he comes back with ideas the following day. Whether he's here or not, there's a lot of work you can do. ... I really think he works hard at it. He puts his work in." Dan Snyder will probably have to decide between RG3 and Gruden this offseason. Nov 19 - 9:00 PM

RG3 sounds like a terrible teammate. Throwing his teammates under the bus while he is playing like dogshit and now this :yao:

It was really terrible for him to get all those TV deals after his rookie season. I think it's clear he regressed, but he had to have been working a lot harder in college than in the pro's because he looked fairly polished for a rookie. I mean, he wasn't Luck, but he had a lot of potential. Dan Snyder probably ruined this guy's career. They could probably get something for him if they traded him still at this point since he's a QB. Trade him to Chip and watch him become the GOAT Danny :D

He just hasn't taken that next step. He's got all the potential in the world injury aside, but he still looks like he just hasn't grown as a player. Injury probably plays a part, but the excuse gets old after a while. Reading the wrong side of the field, bad mechanics, etc.

I still believe RGIII can be the best QB from that class. The guy has a lot working against him though. And he needs to stay as far away from a microphone or the media as possible, which seems to be impossible for him.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the Rams traded like 3rd for RGIII? lol

If you actually watched the interview, he wasn't throwing his teammates under the bus. That was just the sensationalist headline NFL.com's yellow journalists used to grab people's attention.

The quote is taken completely out of context. He is talking about the whole team getting better, he even specifically says he isn't in the class of Peyton or Brady unlike what that article would have you believe.

Haha. I actually feared the Rams could build a formidable team but so far, nothing really to worry about. When that DL is on they are quite scary though.

Two years ago, Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III took the NFL by storm with a combination of running and passing that kept defenses off balance and guessing all year long. Until he was injured while running.

Since then, an effort has been made to make Griffin more of a passer and less of a runner. And it hasn’t worked.

Now? Coach Jay Gruden sounds willing to consider having Griffin run some more as a last-ditch effort to make him more productive.

“It’s a production-based business,” Gruden told Albert Breer of NFL Media. “We haven’t won many games lately with him. We gotta figure out a way to get in the end zone. We just have to score. I don’t care how we do it. If it’s running the zone-read, I don’t care. Quarterback sneaks, I don’t give a damn. We gotta find a way to utilize him where we can get productive drives and stay away from negative plays and have some consistency.”

Consistency and the absence of negative plays could help Griffin rebuild his shattered confidence. Which Gruden may have further shattered while discussing Griffin’s shattered confidence on the record.

“His biggest thing, he’s been coddled for so long,” Gruden said of Griffin. “It’s not a negative, he’s just been so good, he just hasn’t had a lot of negative publicity. Everybody’s loved him. Some adversity is striking hard at him now, and how he reacts to that off the field, his mental state of mind, how it affects his confidence, hopefully it’s not in a negative way. I read Drew Brees said after a couple interceptions, ‘I’m never gonna lose confidence, I’m gonna come out firing all the time.’”

And then Gruden may have stomped the shattered pieces of confidence into powder.

“He’s auditioned long enough,” Gruden said of Griffin. “Clock’s ticking. He’s gotta play. We’ll see. . . . We want Robert to excel, we really do. But the last two games, it hasn’t been very good, anywhere. We gotta play better around him. And the biggest thing for us as playcallers, and for him, we just have to come together and jell with plays he’s comfortable with. That takes time. But we don’t have a lot of time.”

Griffin’s time could run out because of the backup who won two games before Griffin returned from injury.

“We have a guy behind him that played pretty well, and people are looking, ‘OK, he’s 2-0,’” Gruden said regarding Colt McCoy. “There’s always pressure on the quarterback to perform. And if you don’t perform, like any other position, somebody’s behind you pushing you.”

The way Gruden has been talking lately, maybe McCoy will end up pushing Griffin to the bench. Or maybe right out of town.

Unless Griffin pushes another head coach out of town first.

He wasn't throwing his teammates under the bus in that interview, but he definitely threw his teammates under the bus in the Bucs post game interview.

“Great quarterbacks, the Peytons, the Aaron Rodgers, those guys don’t play well if their guys don’t play well. They don’t.

“We need everybody. I need every one of those guys in that locker room. And I know they’re looking at me saying the same thing. I’ll never quit on them. And I need them to do the same.”

Since he seems to put more time into his commercials and other promotion deals, I can't say that I'm all that surprised.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Speaking Monday, Redskins coach Jay Gruden hinted Robert Griffin III will be on a very short leash against the Colts.
"Well, we want to beat Indianapolis," was Gruden's response when asked how long RGIII will be allowed to settle in. "We want to win every game. And I have to put the people in there who (are) gonna help us win those games." Gruden went on in the same vein. It's crystal clear RGIII is now at weekly risk of in-game benchings. He's barely even a viable QB2. Nov 25 - 2:14 PM

Just got an update on my phone saying RGIII has been benched, and Colt Mccoy will start VS the colts!

I haven't read through the entire thread, so I don't know if it was posted here or not. But you could tell it was really going downhill quickly when everyone reported that RG3 had special privileges amongst the Skins and in the facility (such as having his wife at spring training when no other wives are allowed and apparently his fmaily had an all-access pass to all the Skins facilities) and that those were revoked. You can't have special treatment like that revoked without a fall from grace, IMO.

RG3 is a bust and isn't made for the NFL. Trying to find the thread where I called this in last year. That said, this probably isn't the way to go. Colt McCoy and Kirk Cousins aren't going to be anything more than backup QBs either. The Redskins don't have a clue what they are doing or how to manage a franchise

It's idiotic that the Skins would give him such special privileges in the first place!

Snyder has ruined his once promising franchise QB. Gonna be hard for him to recover some of his confidence after this. Jay Gruden is gone, but RGIII will never be able to lead this team again imo.

Why are the Redskins doing this for a game in which they can't win regardless of who's at QB?

RG3 to Philly?

He'd probably be great but he'd get injured.

Sources tell the Washington Post it's "highly unlikely" Robert Griffin III will return to the Redskins next season.

On draft day in 2012, the Redskins gave the Rams their first-round picks in 2012, 2013 and 2014 in addition to a 2012 second-rounder for the right to take Griffin No. 2 overall. He was spectacular while leading the Redskins to the playoffs as a rookie, but suffered a career-altering ACL tear in the Wild Card game against the Seahawks. Since then, RG3 has tanked in terms of on-field performance, getting benched by Mike Shanahan late last year and again by Jay Gruden this year. Gruden appears to have convinced meddling owner Dan Snyder that the Redskins need to find a quarterback that fits his pocket-passer scheme, meaning Griffin can likely be had for pennies on the dollar this offseason.
