Update: Tamba Hali restructures contract with Chiefs

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

The Chiefs could free up $9 million in cap space by releasing OLB Tamba Hali.
The Chiefs are strapped against the cap and Hali is slowing down a bit at age 31. They also want to re-sign stud free agent OLB Justin Houston and used the No. 23 overall pick on OLB Dee Ford last May. We'll know the Chiefs' decision on Hali soon as he's owed a $2M roster bonus in March. Jan 5 - 9:09 AM

I think they should keep him (even though I like Dee Ford). Having both him & Houston makes their pass rush insanely good and has played a big factor in their back to back winning seasons.

Come to Green Bay, Tamba! We could move clay inside almost exclusively for at least a seaosn or two until Julius retires (or maybe he does this season). We will have a lot of cap space, and pass rushing is key!

Man imagine that - Hali, Clay, Hawk, Peppers!

Tamba has been a keystone of the defense and really has been one of the big reasons KC have managed to improve.

Tamba can still contribute to a team. He still has some solid play making ability left in the tank.

The problem with Tamba at this point is that what's left in the tank only takes him to about the halfway point in the year. He's fighting through holds on every other play, but it's football. There are plenty of holding no-calls for every team. Still, Tamba just can't fight through them after week nine. His motor never stops, but it does slow significantly after the season starts to wear on him.

It's sad for me, because I absolutely love this dude in a Chiefs uni. If anyone deserves to retire in KC red at this point, it's Tamba. That being said though, he'd probably have to do it after taking a pay cut. He's just not the same guy every week. If Dee Ford is anything close to what they hoped he'd be when they drafted him, it might be time to plug him in and move forward. :(

I'd hate to see him go, but I don't know that it's avoidable right now. 9 million is just too much for a team that's as cash-strapped as they are.

Tamba Hali says he'd be willing to take a pay cut to remain in Kansas City.

Cutting Hali would free up $9 million in space for the cap-strapped Chiefs. "At this stage of my career, it isn’t about money," Hali, 31, said. "The Kansas City Chiefs have taken care of me. ... So I’m not one of those guys who gets all bent out of shape over money. I love playing the game, I want to win a championship in Kansas City." It's about as straightforward of a pay-cut sentiment as you're ever going to see. Hali didn't attach any strings to his statement. The question is if the Chiefs can keep him at any price. Justin Houston needs to get paid, and Dee Ford was a 2014 first-rounder.

Hali is also going into the final year of his contract, so he seems ripe for an extension to spread the cap hit out over the next 3-4 years

Go to Dallas and mentor Lawrence. Play on a team that has a real quarterback.

Sounds like a plan, Tamba!

I'd think a vikes fan would want him to mentor Barr :badass:

Tamba Hali and Anthony Barr play different positions.

That X 10. Anthony Barr is an OLB in a 4-3. Jesus Christ.

To be fair, there were a lot of people that thought Barr was capable of playing rush linebacker in a 3-4 during the draft process. He just won't have that opportunity in Zimmer's defense.

Exactly :slingblade:

If I recall correctly, Barr plays a similar role to Emmanuel Lamur in Zimmer's system. A guy who can play stand-up 4-3 OLB but can also effectively rush.

Emmanuel Lamur rarely rushes the passer. He is in coverage almost always.

Out of 530 pass defense snaps he rushed 74 times and had only 2 hits and 3 hurries.

My bad; I assumed he rushed a lot more.

You're probably thinking more of a Von Miller-esque role.

Unfortunately i think Tamba will be released.

gotta fix the O-Line and get some help at the WR position. (then hope Alex can get the ball farther than 6 yards downfield.)

still haven't heard why cutting him is a better option than this

Per Rotoworld.com:

The Chiefs have agreed to a restructured contract with OLB Tamba Hali.
Hali was owed a $6.75 million base salary and $2 million roster bonus. This appears to be a pay cut, clearing room for the Chiefs to fit in Jeremy Maclin and/or Rodney Hudson. Hali, 31, managed six sacks in 2014, the second fewest of his career. He figures to lose snaps to 2014 first-rounder Dee Ford this season. Mar 8 - 9:59 PM
