Peyton noncommittal on his future

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Peyton Manning was noncommittal on his playing future following the Broncos' playoff loss to the Colts.
"I can't answer every what-if circumstance," said Manning, who turns 39 in two months. "What if you're not as healthy? What if certain coaches leave? I can't answer every what-if situation. I think I'll have to take some time to see how I feel, see how I feel physically." The Broncos are tentatively expected to move on from John Fox, which could affect Manning's decision. We would guess the Broncos want Manning back -- at least for one more year -- despite his hefty $19 million base salary. Jan 11 - 8:56 PM
Source: Denver Post
Sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter that Peyton Manning has been playing through a torn right quad -- specifically the rectus femoris -- for the last month.
Manning sustained the injury in Week 15 and the bruising reportedly spread to the back of his leg. In the four games since, Peyton threw a paltry four touchdowns and was intercepted four times. In 13 previous games, he threw 36 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. An inability to drive off his plant leg may have contributed to the drastic downturn in effectiveness and arm strength. However, Manning was practicing in full and it's worth noting that a "strain" is by definition a tear. Manning could not have played through a complete tear. The future Hall of Famer still heads into the offseason with plenty of question marks. Jan 12 - 10:58 AM

I'd like to think this will have more to do with his health than anything else, but I can't help but wonder how much the coaching decision will weigh in

I have a very hard time believing that Manning will learn a new system, or for that matter teach his system to a new regime to stay in Denver. Unless he really loves the coach.

Also, John Elway can't make this degree of sweeping changes and not realize that PFM was just as much of the problem as these coaches. See: signature.

So do you see him retiring?

He would need to be put down to ever retire. We'll have to cut him first.

Per Rotoworld.com:

A source "very close" to Peyton Manning told Ross Tucker that he thinks Manning will play in 2015.
"I think he'll be back," the source said. "He was just emotional after the game because of the disappointment of the loss and everything that went into it. ... He just needs to take a month off and get away from it all and he'll be fine." That may be true, but questions of health, coaching staff and contract all need to be answered. Manning's $19M deal for 2015 becomes guaranteed in March if he's still on Denver's roster. Jan 13 - 9:24 AM
Speaking Tuesday, Broncos GM John Elway said he wants Peyton Manning back for 2015, but that he's told Manning to take "four or five weeks" to make his decision.
Elway believes Manning "needs to get away" before deciding whether or not to return for an 18th year in the NFL. Elway also said he'd be talking to Manning during the team's search for a new coach. "Peyton is going to be involved in the process," were Elway's exact words. The early signs suggest Manning will be back for 2015, but it's far from a given. It's unclear how much of a role, if any, the Broncos' replacement for John Fox will factor into Manning's decision. Jan 13 - 2:17 PM

I think with all this change in the coaching staff in Denver...it'd be best for Peyton to retire. A new regime, and if I'm gonna be taking the HC job in Denver I want to start building for the future now.

Peyton is good, but his postseason record and the apparent dropoff in production as the season goes on is well-documented.

Denver needs to shift from a win now...to a prepare for the future mentality. If Peyton does come back I can only see it being for one year.

His best days are most def behind him.

The Denver Post's Woody Paige reports Peyton Manning plans to return to the Broncos in 2015.

Paige isn't a Broncos beat writer, but has a long history in the Denver area and cites "three trustworthy sources." As long as Manning passes his annual spring physical and informs the team prior to March 9, he should be back for another run at the Super Bowl in 2015 under new coach Gary Kubiak. Kubiak and GM John Elway have both publicly voiced their support for Manning's return.

Razor's actually part of the Bronco's FO confirmed.

Citing "sources close to the team," Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports there's a "big question" about whether the Broncos want Peyton Manning for 2015.

"At this point in his career, the Broncos could fail (Manning's physical) for any reason, including the four neck surgeries that he has already had," Cole said. "They're going to have to feel very comfortable about this." Manning's $19 million salary will no longer be guaranteed if he fails his physical. While Manning's health was an issue late in 2014, we find this report very hard to believe. Until now, every utterance — both public and "sourced" — has suggested Denver desperately wants Manning back. Perhaps this is just a ploy to speed up Manning's decision. Manning will reportedly meet with GM John Elway before the Combine.

Peyton Manning did as he said he would, yet his status remains the same: undecided.

The Broncos quarterback flew to Denver to meet with the team's brass -- general manager John Elway and president/CEO Joe Ellis -- on Thursday to discuss his future, but no decision came out of the meeting, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a team source. Manning returned to New Orleans to continue training, presumably with an eye toward the 2015 season.

Denver wants to know of Manning's decision before its brass leaves for the NFL Scouting Combine next week, but with Manning still contemplating his future with the team, the preferred window is closing. Although offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said "there's certainly no rush" on Manning's decision, a second meeting might need to be expedited in order to meet Denver's time frame.

Adding to the pressure of the calendar is the requirement for Manning to pass a physical administered between Feb. 23 and March 5, per The Denver Post. The biggest factor, though, comes March 9. If Manning is on the roster then, his $19 million salary becomes guaranteed.

Manning, meanwhile, will continue to train with renowned strength and conditioning coach Mackie Shilstone, who is considered a specialist in career longevity. The latest news does little to let us know if we'll see Manning spend his 18th season in a Broncos uniform, or if Brock Osweiler's time is mere months away.

But the lack of a decision after one meeting likely raises the level of concern a couple ticks among Manning fans in Denver.

So he met with John and Joe, and nothing came out of it? He has to be retiring right? :shifty:

If he dicks around to get his 20 mil and then retires I'm going to murder him myself.

I just hope we have the balls to cut him before the deadline. No pussy footing around, just pull the trigger.

By Chris Mortensen | ESPN

Peyton Manning reassured Denver Broncos officials, including general manager John Elway, that he is physically and mentally prepared to play at a significant level in 2015, league and team sources told ESPN.

The two sides met Thursday in Denver, and while retirement technically remains an option for Manning, he told Elway and CEO Joe Ellis it isn't in his plans, sources said.

Manning took it upon himself to get a comprehensive evaluation from a renowned performance manager and trainer, Mackie Shilstone, during the past 2½ weeks in New Orleans. Shilstone, who was worked with several elite athletes in the latter stages of their careers, has given the quarterback a strong assessment based on numerous workouts and tests, a source said.

The quad injury that plagued Manning at the end of the 2014 season is fully healed.

The Broncos and the quarterback have other elements to explore in the coming days that range from a potential contract restructuring to having a formal physical exam, as mandated in Manning's contract, sources said. If Manning is on the Broncos' roster March 9, one day before the league's new business year commences, he will be guaranteed $19 million for 2015.

The Broncos have not only a new head coach in Gary Kubiak but also key free agents they would like to retain, including wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and tight end Julius Thomas. However, with a healthy $26 million projected for the team's cap space even with Manning on the roster, the team is capable of solving most of its free-agent goals.

The team also has more than $50 million of cap space projected for 2016.

Elway has publicly stated that he wants Manning to return, but it is uncertain under what conditions and whether it includes a dramatic restructuring of the veteran's contract.

Been hearing a good amount of Manning hate from Broncos fans recently, which i dont get. When healthy he's better than anyone else the Broncos would be able to get right now. He might not be a great playoff QB but he has been to 3 Superbowls. If you think Osweiler has a chance of taking the Broncos to the Superbowl you're delusional, and there aren't exactly alternatives.

I think they'd be best off having Manning and trying to get him to lean on the run game a little more if they can get it going this next season.

Because he's a choker, can't win a big game, regular-season wonder, it's better to have no one at all than Manning, etc. etc.

Think about how brutal each and every one of his playoff losses are. All the great regular season success, only to fail in the biggest games of the year, every single year. I wouldn't be able to handle the amount of pain it would take to be a fan of Peyton Manning. True masochists only.

and at this point there's no reason to think it'll change, he's not getting any younger so I don't see how anyone could expect him to play better in his 17th game after playing weekly for four months, that takes a beating on anyone and a 39 year old body is not designed to stand up to that

You're always risking the pain of a playoff loss if you're a fan of a team that can make it that far. Only one team wins the big game. It may be sometimes worse with Manning because people build up so much hope, but having that chance is better than not having any at all. Who wants to go into a season knowing their team won't do anything special? As a long time fan of a team that's seen some great years and even more horrible ones, the great years are far better even if it ends in a disappointed loss.

Now if fans are wanting to throw in the tower and get rid of Peyton because they want to go ahead and start the inevitable journey to finding a franchise QB, I can kind of understand that. But fans are acting as if they would have a better chance in the playoffs with another QB, when there isn't a decent one available. Everyone loves the backup until they get into the game.

Point is if I was a fan I'd rather keep Peyton and take my chances for one more shot than start looking for another QB, which as we've seen with many teams can potentially take decades. That or hope the FO can put together a dominant defense which might be even more rare.

Not Bronco fans, that's why they will be happy to get rid of him.
