Report: Texans will cut or trade Andre Johnson

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain reports the Texans have given Andre Johnson permission to seek a trade, and if one can't be found, he'll be released.
The Texans informed Johnson that he'll have a reduced role in 2015, and the soon-to-be 34-year-old has asked to be cut or traded. Houston will grant him his wish. We highly doubt any team will trade for Johnson, considering he's scheduled to earn base salaries of $10.5 million and $11 million the final two years of his contract. The Texans will clear $8.825 million against the cap by shedding Johnson's contract. The move will lock DeAndre Hopkins into the clear-cut No. 1 receiver role after he took another leap forward as a sophomore in 2014. Mar 2 - 8:27 PM

Hope he can land with a contender and get a ring out of it. Hate to see Andre go, but it looks like it's inevitable now.

If I were Andre I'd look at...

:Patriots: - Obvious reasoning is obvious.

:Seahawks: - Give Russell the true possession receiver that he's never had.

:Broncos: - Reunite with Kubes and play with Peyton. Probably would have to take less money in Denver, and Andre is very prideful when it comes to the $$$.

Why would you wish Dre to the Seahawks? That's cruel man. What did Dre ever do to you?

Honestly it's all about him getting a ring out of it. I can't help but wish him luck in doing so. For obvious reasons he will be an all-time favorite of mine no matter what. I just want him to achieve what he sadly could not in Houston.

Hell Green Bay would be cool with me too. As long as he doesn't join the Cowgirls or the Colts. If that happens, you can just disregard that first paragraph.

Andre Johnson says he "laughed at" Bill O'Brien after the Texans' coach recently informed him he would only catch around 40 balls if Johnson returned to the team in 2015.

"They gave me my role, and I just laughed at them," Johnson said. "How do you tell a guy who is used to catching 80 balls a year that he was going to catch 40?" O'Brien also told Johnson he "wasn't even likely to be a starter" in 2015. "So I was real honest with him: 'If that's your role for me, you're going to be dealing with a miserable football player,'" Johnson told O'Brien. Johnson is expected to be cut or traded in the next few days.

I miss when this guy was the best. Been a fan since 2003.

That was pretty stupid of O'Brien to say if Andre is telling the truth, but regardless of that the real reason for the breakup is $$$. Same reason for the drama last offseason. I think Andre is going to be pretty damn humbled when other teams won't throw $10 million into his lap.

Thanks for everything Andre. Sorry the Texans couldn't deliver you a championship.

Didn't they tell him he wouldn't be a starter?

Per Rotoworld.com:

PFT's Mike Florio reports Andre Johnson has asked for his release from the Texans.
Johnson and his agent have no plans to do the Texans any favors and seek a trade. The 34-year-old (in July) will instead wait for his release, head to the open market, and pick his own team. No team was going to trade for Johnson and his $21.5 million in salary over the final two years of his contract anyway. Expect Johnson to target a contender in an attempt to reach the Super Bowl. Mar 4 - 10:46 AM
ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley considers Baltimore a potential landing spot for Andre Johnson.
Hensley notes GM Ozzie Newsome's history of success with "old" wide receivers -- Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Smith Sr. -- as well as the need if free agent Torrey Smith walks. The Ravens are an annual playoff team, which will appeal to Johnson as his career winds down. Baltimore is currently strapped for cap space, but could make cuts and restructure deals to create room. Hensley sees Johnson as an "ideal fit" in new OC Marc Trestman's offense. Mar 4 - 11:17 AM

Andre Johnson would be a nice fit for the Ravens especially if Torrey Smith walks. They'd have two old guys on the outside but I think that would still spell trouble for opposing defenses lol. I still think the Pats would be the best fit for Dre by far. Colts would be a nice spot for him if Reggie retires. And quite honestly, if we resign Maclin, I wouldn't mind the Eagles getting Dre. He'd be a cheap solid #2 receiving option that would be a lot better than Riley Cooper. He could also teach Jordan Matthew a thing or two.
