In an offseason filled with shocking retirements, this one might be the most surprising.

Following a rookie season in which he impressed, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland told ESPN's Outside The Lines on Monday he's retiring, citing safety issues.

The 24-year-old said he notifed the Niners of his decision on Friday.

"I just honestly want to do what's best for my health," Borland told Outside the Lines. "From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think it's worth the risk."

The news couldn't come at a worst time for a Niners team that was counting on Borland to replace the recently retired Patrick Willis in the starting lineup.

"I feel largely the same, as sharp as I've ever been, for me it's wanting to be proactive," said Borland. "I'm concerned that if you wait till you have symptoms, it's too late. ... There are a lot of unknowns. I can't claim that X will happen. I just want to live a long healthy life, and I don't want to have any neurological diseases or die younger than I would otherwise."

Well this offseason keeps getting worse for San Francisco

What a disastrous offseason. Not mad at Chris. It's his life.

Kinda sucks.

We need a control group of players that never played youth foosball and compare them to the ones that did and see which had the higher instances of CTE.

While I'm sure he's telling the truth about his health concerns, there is absolutely no way that Willis AND Borland leaving football had nothing to do with the way the organization handled one of the best coaches in the NFL (at that time, anyway. As we all know, he's back in the college ranks).

There is absolutely no way that players wouldn't react to your FO badmouthing a great coach out of town just because he didn't play along with everything they wanted. The 49ers organization proved to its fans that it's more about its head coaches complying with their wants, being an ass-kisser to put it more clearly, than it is with winning.

I'm pretty sure that both of these players are leaving for their own personal reasons. Players don't dictate their careers and livelihoods because of the coach they are playing for. That sounds absurd.

Right. If that was the case they'd have simply demanded trades or something.

This could be the case with Willis i don't think it was with Borland it sounded like he was doing his research he would re-tweet stuff on twitter about concussions.

Why's this post getting negged? Cause BC said it? They've lost Willis, Borland, and Harbaugh. They're a shell of themselves.

Guarantee you the intensity of the rivalry will be the same. Throw the records out when we play. Ever since both teams got good again and met in the playoffs it's been awesome. That's not changing.
