FartWaffles 1,857 Posted April 14, 2015 http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/9385/marcus-mariota The Chargers are conducting a private workout in Eugene with Oregon QB Marcus Mariota Tuesday. Perhaps HC Mike McCoy, OC Rich Reich, QBs coach Nick Sirianni and a bunch of front office members are just doing their due diligence. Or maybe the trade rumors flying around Philip Rivers and the Chargers have some legs. The narrative states that Rivers doesn't want to move to Los Angeles and the Titans, holding the No. 2 overall pick, want a proven veteran to stabilize their quarterback situation. "Many close to the situation believe the Chargers head to Oregon while considering the notion of a draft-day trade," says the Union-Tribune San Diego. Any potential deal hinges on Mariota falling to No. 2, as San Diego is reportedly not interested in Florida State QB Jameis Winston. Obviously this is lying season in the NFL, but this rumor has been picking up a lot of steam as of late. Smokescreen or not, what do y'all think about this rumor? I'm especially interested in what the Titans and Chargers fans think of this.
Maverick 791 Posted April 14, 2015 Mariota's not the QB you trade an aging Top 10 QB for.
oochymp 2,393 Posted April 14, 2015 First off, I'd be shocked if San Diego was willing, that said why bring him in for a workout if you're not at least considering it? If they are willing, I'd love to see us pull the trigger. Sure Rivers isn't young, but he's a known commodity at a position that's more essential and thinner than any other position in sports. There are a handful of players (almost all QBs) who if they become available you have to at least listen, and Rivers is on that list.
FartWaffles 1,857 Posted April 14, 2015 Also can't forget that Whiz was the Chargers OC in 2013, so there's dot connecting going on. I honestly hope this doesn't happen, mostly because this would be a good move for the Titans.
oochymp 2,393 Posted April 14, 2015 Yeah, this kinda has the smell of something media created, but it's hard to ignore when they are hosting Mariota for a workout. Then again, maybe they just think he'll have a Rodgers-like fall and want to be ready, who knows.
Vin+ 3,121 Posted April 14, 2015 Not because it's the Titans, but because the idea of Phil not finishing his career with the Chargers is incredibly strange to me.

Vin+ 3,121 Posted April 14, 2015 I just expect QBs to stay with their teams for forever they're good and haven't had periods of suck, even though I can't tell you the last QB that accomplished that. I mean, even PeyPey's release was understandable given the injury. And that first pic never should've happened. Thanks, JDR.
oochymp 2,393 Posted April 14, 2015 (edited) yeah, it is unfortunate how rare that is, though it does seem like there are a few right now who should accomplish that, notably Brady, Roethlisberger, and Flacco, but of course you can't say that for certain until they actually do retire as for retired QBs who spent their whole career with one team, is there anyone more recent than Elway? he's the most recent I can come up with, but he retired in '99, I feel like there should be someone more recent, guess you could also include Locker but if a four year career counts then you're gonna open up some floodgates EDIT: actually, after some quick research Elway retired in 98, Dan Marino didn't retire until a year later and spent his whole career with Miami, I forgot he lasted that long, Aikman also retired in 2000 after spending his whole career in Dallas, but that still leaves nobody who's retired in the last fifteen years Edited April 14, 2015 by oochymp
.AirMcNair. 1,232 Posted April 14, 2015 It's being reported that Whisenhunt wants to trade for Rivers now as well. #2 for Rivers #17 #83 Would be ideal. Though I could see the #83 being left out.
DonovanMcnabb for H.O.F 2,241 Posted April 14, 2015 So I guess all this is over the plans to eventually move to LA, and Rivers being unhappy about it? Talk about a train wreck if this happens. Lmao.
CampinWithaMissingPerson 2,025 Posted April 15, 2015 It takes some time with some but eventually every Titans fan proves they're evil
BJORN 679 Posted April 15, 2015 So I guess all this is over the plans to eventually move to LA, and Rivers being unhappy about it? Talk about a train wreck if this happens. Lmao. He is in the final year of his contract. Hasn't entertained extension talks. Made some sly comments about how much punishment he has taken. I haven't seen the rumors that Rivers stated he is unhappy about a move to LA but I imagine he would be as his family has found home in SD. All I'm gonna say is trading Rivers for Mariota & then moving to LA in 2016 would be BRUTAL. Imagine this headline in week 1: "Kellen Clemens to lead the Chargers in their final season in SD as Mariota continues to develop"
AL_Royalty 489 Posted April 19, 2015 So I guess all this is over the plans to eventually move to LA, and Rivers being unhappy about it? Talk about a train wreck if this happens. Lmao. Apparently Rivers grew up near Nashville, and his wife's family lives somewhere out there as well. Even if this is mostly media-driven speculation, there does seem to be some legit teeth to it. Also, I'd say the real train wreck in this situation was the Titans' unfortunate resolution to Jake Locker's career. This would be a pretty good consolation prize, even if there's not many miles left in the motor. It would be awfully embarrassing for the Titans though if Marriotta ends up being the next Russell Wilson right out of the gate. I'm not expecting that he will or anything. Just sayin'. 56AceInDaPlace 110 Posted April 20, 2015 I would make the trade if we got Rivers, their 17th and another player or top pick. To move up to #2 it takes A LOT and Rivers isn't a Manning or Brady. He's top 10 but still.. I rather just draft Leonard Williams. We are at #2 with a top defensive player there. We should take him.
RazorStar 4,025 Posted April 20, 2015 I'd gladly trade you Peyton for the 2nd overall pick if you want it. >_>

BC 331 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) I wanna see them make it work with Rivers this year. They could win a wide open AFC and they have the pieces. Edited April 21, 2015 by BC
BLUE 1,026 Posted April 22, 2015 Per Rotoworld.com: Asked Wednesday whether he's discussed a Philip Rivers trade with the Titans, Chargers GM Tom Telesco replied "I'm going to leave that go." Telesco had a prime opportunity to shoot down trade rumors and commit to Rivers as the Chargers' 2015 starter. Instead, Telesco was noncommittal and used careful word choice, stating only that it is the Chargers' "plan and intent" for Rivers to stay with the team. Per beat writer Michael Gehlken, the possibility of the Chargers trading Rivers in a deal to acquire Oregon QB Marcus Mariota "seemed real before Telesco stepped to the podium around 11 a.m. Wednesday," and "didn't appear any more ficticious when he left it 33 minutes later." Vin+ 3,121 Posted April 23, 2015 I don't believe Phil would lie to the kiddies, even given Rotoworld's opinion on the matter. Speaking to a group of school children on Thursday, Philip Rivers said he's staying in San Diego, and "not to believe the media." Yes, it's a slow news day. Rivers' words are rich for multiple reasons. He didn't specify how long he might remain in San Diego — he's heading into a contract year — while the media has been passing along direct quotes. It was Rivers himself who told the Union-Tribune San Diego he won't be signing an extension. Considering GM Tom Telesco was noncommittal on Rivers Wednesday, his 2015 status remains far from settled.
