Thanatos 2,847 Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) This is a very very interesting read on the origins of the West Coast offense along with a guy that I haven't even heard of before: Greg Cook, who was apparently a rookie sensation QB with Cincy during their second year as a franchise. Cook led the AFL in YPA (9.411) and YPC (17.5) as a rookie and only four QBs have ever bested his rookie season in those two categories- far later on in their careers as well. (As a side note, why was this guy never brought up when discussing greatest rookie QB season ever? Bill Walsh describes him simply as "the greatest talent to ever play QB.") Anywho, its an interesting article on why the WCO was developed, as Cook got hurt, (rotator cuff tear, medical tech couldn't really fix it and he only attempted three more passes after his rookie season. So the Bengals had to bring in a QB from Buffalo who didn't have the same arm, and they developed an offense around shorter throws to disguise that and the expansion team offensive line they had.
