Chuck Pagano on the hotseat?

Recommended Posts

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Chuck Pagano is entering a "make-or-break year" as the Colts' head coach.

There have been whispers of a schism between GM Ryan Grigson and Pagano, which were initially relayed by CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora and the Indy Star's Bob Kravitz. FOX Sports' Mike Garofolo reported that one of the reasons for tension is Grigson's belief that Donte Moncrief should have played over a clearly-washed-up Reggie Wayne last season. Pagano has been tight with Wayne since they were both at the University of Miami (FL). Pagano has reportedly rejected a "couple of one-year extension" offers from the Colts. Pagano also attempted to emphasize a "run-first" approach with Trent Richardson in 2013, even when Andrew Luck was the Colts' best means of moving the ball. If Pagano doesn't earn a new contract this year, Grigson could conceivably turn to the college ranks for a more innovative coach, or promote impressive third-year OC Pep Hamilton.

As I've said before Grigson is low key worst GM in the NFL.

Why is it always the coaches who more than maximize 9-7 rosters who are on the hot seat?

it's because he has the best young QB in the league, a decent coach would have gotten five Super Bowls by now with Andrew Luck

lulz. I love sarcasm.

Chuck Pagano must feel like he's taking crazy pills. Like Razor and Bucmin have said, they should be firing the GM if anyone at all.

Other than drafting Luck (something a baby could/would do), Grigson hasn't done Chuck many favors.

"Hey Chuck, we need a runningback right?"

"Yeah, we can't have Luck run this offense by himself. I mean he could, but it'd be nice to put less pressure on the kid. Bradshaw is a little too old to be our bellcow back."

"Good, we traded one of our first rounders for Trent Richardson. Luck should have an easier time now!"

*Chuck hangs up phone, starts crying in the corner*

T.Y Hilton was a pretty good favor. But that doesn't make grigson a competent GM.

T.Y is really the only other player he can hang his hat on. Luck was an obvious pick. His drafts have been a mess after it. As have his FA signings.

ESPN Colts reporter Mike Wells reports the team will fire coach Chuck Pagano at season's end.

It's not exactly a surprise. Issued a Super Bowl-or-else edict, Pagano's team imploded even before Andrew Luck got knocked out with a kidney injury. Pagano's relationship with GM Ryan Grigson is also infamously toxic. The real question is if Grigson will survive. His firing would be justified, though owner Jim Irsay has also seemed prone to meddling in all the team's biggest personnel decisions.

According to "multiple sources with knowledge of the situation," Colts GM Ryan Grigson has been a "terrible meddler" with coach Chuck Pagano.

Per reporter Bob Kravitz, Grigson has routinely dictated who should play, and "undermined Pagano when he wanted to discipline certain players." As an example, Kravitz reports Grigson insisted a deadweight Trent Richardson keep playing because Grigson "was concerned with creating the narrative that it was a good trade." This "report" is clearly coming from Pagano's side, but Grigson has been highly questionable, at best, as Indy's GM. Pagano's job appears toast, but Grigson's future is murkier. While Grigson has apparently meddled with his coach, he deals with near constant meddling from owner Jim Irsay. It's fair to say the Colts are in disarray as a franchise.

Grigson is one of the worst GMs in football. Not only does he make bad trades, he gives out terrible contracts and drafts players that don't fit the system they run :yao:

Pagano seems like a good coach to me. I'd take him in SD*

lolColts. They allow this shitty GM to make the wrong guy the scapegoat. They will continue to suck if they continue to accumulate sub-par pieces. Nobody is afraid of Andrew Luck + an NFL Europe roster.

I don't think Pagano should be canned. Grigson yes, but this is life in the NFL.

So, not only does Pagano not get fired, but both he and Grigson get extensions.

Damn, NFL, you weird.

Colts signed GM Ryan Grigson to a three-year extension through 2019.

Word out of Colts land for much of the past two seasons has been that Grigson and coach Chuck Pagano didn't get along whatsoever. Now, reports are that was overblown, as both Grigson and Pagano are coming back next season. Pagano got a new contract late Monday night, and Grigson already had one year remaining on his deal. Grigson has been a very poor drafter and has spent wildly in free agency only to whiff on most of his big-money deals. They'll look to right the ship and get back to the playoffs on the coattails of Andrew Luck in 2016.

Colts signed coach Chuck Pagano to a four-year extension and will retain him for the 2016 season.

Details of the new deal aren't yet known, but the Colts have called a press conference for 10:30 PM tonight to announce the specifics. Pagano was rumored to be on the outs in Indianapolis, but he met with owner Jim Irsay this afternoon and into the evening and was able to talk his way back into the job. Pagano is coming off an 8-8 season where the Colts used five different quarterbacks. His players love him, but it'll be interesting to see if GM Ryan Grigson now gets the boot. Behind the scenes, Grigson and Pagano reportedly didn't get along at all.

Prime example of what I've been saying. For all those people that blindly follow the idea that a GM should come before the HC....makes no sense IMO.

So I do agree that the GM should come first and the GM and owner should then look for their HC. I also think that if anyone should have been fired, out of Pagano and Grigson, I would easily choose the latter of the two.

That said, I wouldn't have given Grigson an extension. He clearly has not been a good GM at all, and even though I believe the GM should come first in the hiring process, Grigson had his shot and he sucks. Keeping Pagano makes sense, IMO, and Irsay should be one of the owners looking for a new GM.

But yeah...not how it went down... lolColts
