Shift in League year dates imminent
20 May 2013 - 03:15 PM
http://espn.go.com/n...g-draft-sources
The NFL and NFL Players Association are on the verge of pushing back the draft to May and moving up the start of the league year to before the Indianapolis scouting combine, according to league and union sources.
As for the draft, the NFLPA is close to signing off on allowing the NFL to move the draft to May from April for at least the next three years, according to sources. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell can set the date of the draft without the NFLPA's approval, although he would prefer to have the union's blessing to maintain league harmony.
The start of the new league year is now expected to be moved to before the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis rather than after it, per league sources. The NFLPA wanted to give free agents a chance to find new teams sooner.
The NFL originally proposed a league year that would have started later in the calendar year and the NFLPA rejected that idea, believing it to be unfair to its players.
This year's scouting combine took place from Feb. 20-26. The 2013 league year began on March 12.
This seems to put more focus on FA, will give teams and players longer time to find teams and give the league more exposure. -
Buddy Nix transitions out of GM role with Bills
13 May 2013 - 11:59 AM
The Buffalo Bills announced Monday that Buddy Nix stepped down from his role as Executive Vice President/General Manager and will transition to Special Assistant. The move comes just three weeks after team president Russ Brandon said, "Buddy Nix is our general manager and will be for a long time."
Harrison: Post-draft Power Rankings
After the 2013 NFL Draft, Elliot Harrison updates his Power Rankings, with plenty of teams moving up and down the board. More ...
Out of respect for the outgoing general manager, the Bills have no plans to announce Nix's successor on Monday, a club source tells NFL.com's Albert Breer. The plan has been for assistant general manager Doug Whaley to succeed Nix since he was hired away from the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010.
The transition from Nix to Whaley was foreshadowed when the Bills extended the latter's contract with a succession plan early this year. In other words, the decision might have been as much Brandon's as Nix's.
Nix, 73, came to the Bills along with former head coach Chan Gailey prior to the 2010 season. In three seasons together, the pair managed just a 16-32 record. It was Nix's first stint as a general manager after a long career as a college coach, pro scout and front-office executive with the Bills and San Diego Chargers.
Now that he has piloted the Bills through the 2013 NFL Draft, Nix stated that it is right time to step aside because he's leaving "a good young roster" and "an excellent head coach with a good staff." The organization should be in good hands with Whaley, a respected talent evaluator who helped build two Super Bowl teams with the Steelers. -
Living on Mars?

Would you go, knowing you may never come back? I think the plan is to send 8 people at first and attempt to grow plants and make it habitable. If I got to come back, I would probably go. Once in the lifetime type of deal and you tell some awesome stories. -

Chris Polian heads to Jacksonville
01 May 2013 - 10:08 AM
Former Colts General Manager Chris Polian is heading to Jacksonville.
Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that Polian will be a scouting director for the Jaguars and one of the top staff members in the personnel department under General Manager Dave Caldwell.
Colts owner Jim Irsay fired Polian and his dad, former Colts President Bill Polian, at the end of the team’s 2-14 season in 2011. Bill Polian then moved on to ESPN, while Chris Polian moved to Atlanta and spent a season with the Falcons, who also employed Caldwell last year.
Now Polian has followed Caldwell from Atlanta to Jacksonville.

The Polians have been drafting terribly for the last 5 years or so. Pretty bad move imo.
